4th gen vs. GX vs. Sequoia

The off-reoading in the new GX may not be as good...compared to the off-road oriented 4runner editions.

This is true but for the light/easy off roading I do, the GX is more then capable. Between the KDSS, wide view monitor sys and crawl control I'm in heaven. I can now see every little twig that gets near the vehicle. It is more capable then my 05 Limited which is all that matters. Also having the Torsen is better then a rear locker (which can be added if need be).

Just to clear something up; you're comparing a 2010/11 GX with an 05 GX. The 2010 was recalled because of how it reacted during avoidance maneuvers, not because it was was susceptible to rolling over.

See here ----> Lexus Vehicles : Customer FAQs for 2010 Lexus GX 460 Recall / Toyota

Also here ----> Consumer Reports Cars Blog: Recall: Lexus to update 2010 GX 460 stability control software

It's only fair to note that Lexus has since resolved the issue with VSC, and that they acted quickly to resolve the issue.

The GX is a my favorite SUV - it's got all the capability of the runner, and the luxury of a Lexus. I prefer the performance of the X5 over the GX, but the cost of ownership is silly. I actually had the guys where I get my wifes 3 series serviced tell me to not open the panoramic sunroof because they break so frequently. I love bimmers, but I'm done fixing them.

Enjoy your GX and throw some pics up when you get the chance.

Are you paying attention? If you quickly peruse the title or the actual article of each of the 4 links that I posted about the recall, you'll notice a glaring word that goes like this: ROLLOVER.

Since the OP did not note what year model he/she purchased, I just made a remark to be careful due to a recall for rollover issues. Anybody who buys a used vehicle need to do their due diligence to check vehicle damage history and whether all recalls were addressed. That was my point.

Then, you have some dude by the name of KOZ come on this forum topic to say there was no such thing as a recall for the GX for rollover issues, and that the GX was not taller than the T4R, and accused me of not knowing what I was talking about.

Of course, I promptly squashed all of his wrong points. It was ridiculous and comical at the same time.

BTW, look at the 2nd link that you posted and you will see this:

"Consequently, Consumer Reports designated the 2010 Lexus GX 460 SUV a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" because we believe that in real-world driving, this situation could lead to a rollover accident."

Just to clarify the FACTS;

The 2010 TE T4R is 74.2" tall (same as the base GX) and the 2010 Premium GX is 73.8" tall (which is exactly what I posted). Yes, the SR5/LE is shorter.

There was NEVER a rollover issue with ANY GX. The issue that CR felt was a problem was the VSC was kicking in late, which Lexus simply recalibrated to engage sooner.

Trust me when I say, no one loved the 4th gen T4R more then me and I can now say the GX is even better in every way except the price (even more so compared to the 5th gen).

Koz

Nice try.

After I dig up the info, now you come back with that?

I think you need to abide by your own principle:

"If you don't know what you are talking about, do yourself a favor and don't let everyone know it."

You obviously cannot give an educated or objective opinion on these two vehicles when you imply the T4R is better off road, when you probably have never ever driven a GX. Then to imply the GX has a rollover issue is totally ridiculous. The FACT is the premium GX is actually shorter than the TE T4R (the base GX is the same height as the T4R). If you don't know what you are talking about, do yourself a favor and don't let everyone know it.

Koz

You clearly need to make up your mind.

Dude,

You seem to be getting very defensive.

Do yourself a favor and don't take what CR says too seriously (or any other publication for that matter). There is only one reason for their opinion, to sell the publication. (and that is all it is, some one's opinion). I value the opinion of time and experience, not an opinion that has questionable motives.

So what is the end result of vehicle stability issues for SUVs? Just a little bit of fish tailing? If CR's report had no merit, Toyota/Lexus wouldn't have shat in their pants and issued an immediate recall while halting sales of the GX for about 2 weeks.

If anything, CR's report benefited those who wanted the GX anyway by giving potential buyers a negotiating point.

Do yourself a favor and leave me alone.

You're embarrassing yourself.

Dude,

If you want to debate you need to stop being so defensive and be a little more open minded.

Here is something to think about; There is no system made that will prevent a vehicle from sliding (back end from coming around) if you enter a turn too fast. Also if ANY vehicle is in a slide and hits a curb it could possibly flip over. Also because SUVs have a higher center of gravity they are more susceptible.

CR identified a problem. Toyota contacted CR and then reproduced the problem. Toyota developed a fix for the problem and performed a recall. CR retested after the fix and agreed that the recall fixed the problem.

There is no longer an issue with the stability programming. So I don't understand what it is you are complaining about. CR's testing is quite rigorous and they say the fix solves the problem.

If you don't like the GX, then don't buy one. But stop slamming it for something that is no longer a problem. Someone here is embarrassing themselves, but it isn't Koz. You're not just wrong, you're being a jerk.

Just offering an update. Test drove some rides today...

Older Sequoia. 2005. I actually kinda dig the throwback feel, but it was big

Newer Sequoia. 2009 POWER BIG Hmmmm....

GX470 - Oh dear. I may have fallen in love.

Tomorrow, looking at a 2005 Lexus GX470 in Nautical Blue with only 19K on the odo. I'm hoping this is the one!

I completey agree!! What thread is complete without some crampy iPhone pics?

I test drove another GX, then the 2011 4R TE. Mistake #1
I stopped by the dealer on a rumor. Mistake #2

They had this... 2005 GX470 with 19,000 original miles. Oil changes every 3 months, tint done, chrome rims (i could pass on this i think), navi update. It's Meridian Blue and I didn't know it existed. Fell in love the moment I saw it. They JUMPED on my 4R too. (I keep my cars flawless) Anyway, PICS!

Thanks for the info after the fact.

Boy...I thought it was pretty clear through the first page of this thread. There were even pictures before you chimed in. I took them out here to save space. Picked it up today and I didn't even roll over on the way home!!! AND, it was raining too!!!!!! :bluejump:

Please, don't stop the :flamewar:, it's totally entertaining...

I'm going for some more :snacker:, will be right back... :D

Your strength is not paying attention...it's going off on a tangent.

Again, you're not paying attention either.

I said that Toyota/Lexus issued a recall on the GX for a potential rollover issue. Some dude on here fiercely denied that a recall was ever issued for the GX. After I presented several links to back up my point, he's still yapping.

You're both wrong and ill informed.

Nobody is slamming the GX.
