4th gen wiper arm issues

Hey guys, got quite the issue with my wiper arms. 2003 4Runner, 218,000 miles.

About 6 months ago, the passenger side wiper completely stopped moving. At the time, I didn't have the funds or tools to do any type of repair myself. So I've been driving with one wiper, which is incredibly stupid. Over the last few days, I've had issues with the driver's side as well: intermittent failure, incomplete passes of the windshield, etc.

We haven't had a whole lot of rain or snow, so it hasn't been a back breaking problem, but the following is:

Right before this happened, the wiper made it about halfway through the initial sweep of the windshield. Not knowing what to do, I got out and moved the arm back to its normal position. Trying to use it again led to the same half or less sweeps. I was afraid the arm would break if it went off the windshield again, so I just sucked it up and drove home.

What would cause the wiper arm to go completely off its normal track like that? Is this something I can diagnose and fix myself, or should I make an appointment with the dealership tomorrow? The fact that both arms are now screwed up leads me to believe the latter is my best option.

pull the cap off the base of the wiper, and check the nut. it may be loose, if it is tighten it.

if its not, you may have stripped it out. remove the nut, then remove the wiper and take a look.

im guessing the wipers were frozen to the windshield at one point, and that is what caused the problem.
