4th generation 4runner. v6 and v8 . Do they use regular or premium.

Just as the title states. Do the 2003 and up 4runners v6 and v8 use regular gas or premium.?

Either will work, but most folks probably use regular. If you search the forum you'll find lots of discussion on this topic. You'll find lots of varied opinions on the subject too.

I have a 2006 V6 Limited and I use regular. I've used one tank of premium and I didn't see a mileage benefit from the extra expense.

I usually run mid grade in ours but with the cost of fuel going up like it is I may try a few tanks of regular.

I doubt it will ping no matter what you put in.

At high altitudes above 5000ft asl you might be able to get away with the lowest octane since the horsepower is slightly reduced. I've been running 87 in mine and I recently switched over to 85 with no ill effects and this includes in our 100 degree plus heat.

I usually run regular through mine, but use one tank of premium every 4th fill. I also use premium for highway travel.

there is no need to run a premium octane in either the v6 or v8 engine.

higher octane only means that the gas can take a higher compression ratio from the engine before it will spontaniously combust due to compression. thus why it is necessary to use high octance in high performance high compression engines and on engines with superchargers or turbo chargers.

4 runner engines run below the critical compression for regular unleaded so premium will do nothing to help or hurt your engine. this includes performance or gas mileage

I've tried 87, 89 and 93 octane (the three grades available here in East Tennessee), and my 2006 V-8 has shown no difference in performance or fuel efficiency.

After the first 3k miles, I have averaged just slightly over 17 mpg. This includes varied driving conditions like pulling a utility trailer, off-road fun, and both city and highway driving.

I use 87 octane. On a recent trip to Colorado I ran 85 octane on one tank, no loss in power or mileage. I tried premium once several yers ago and noticed no difference. I averaged 19.78 mpg calculated (not the computer) over the 2400 mile trip through the moutains in Colorado last month.

I've noticed everybody mainly using 87 regular and it seems not to hurt anything. Do the owners manual for the 2003 and up 4runners recommend using 87 ?

The manual says 87 can be used, however, they recommend a higher octane fuel be used.

altitude make a huge diff. 85 at 6000' is about the same as 87.
