4th to 5th gen?

Looking at getting something newer. Currently have an 2006 sport 4wd Runner with 210,000 on it. Great shape overall.

Looking at a 2016 Trail. Best price I can seem to get is around 36K for the new one. Also looking at a Tundra for 40

How are you guys that upgraded liking the newer ones? Hows that price look?

The other option is to keep my 06 and put some money into it...but with a 2 kids, business, and main job my time of working on cars is limited.

How old are your kids? Would you want a third row to haul other peoples' kids as well? That's the only question I'd have if you're putting 10 years/200k miles on a car (assuming you've had the 06 that long).

I had an 05 4runner 4x4 v8. Now I have 16 4runner limited 4x4. I feel that the 2005 had a more solid feel it. Feel that the 05 was better made. I do like my limited but it lacks some features that are found in the competition. Something simple like auto headlights that you won't find in 16 trail. 36 seems ok. But I bet you can get a 17 off road for just a bit more

I went from an 08 SR5 to a 14 Trail. First thing I noticed was it was a little more sluggish but mainly due to the weight of the 4x4 vs the 4x2. After I got over that, the newer t4r is larger and has a bit more features (entire, more rear seat space). I wouldn't look back and absolutely love the newer body style.

As for the Tundra, they are very nice but not for me. My Fiance's father has a newer 16 Tundra. There's no doubt that it is spacious. It sets 4 to 5 very comfortably. I just don't like driving something that big and getting it into tight spaces. Also I like the enclosed rear vs the truck. I use my 4Runner primarily as a daily driver with a weekend off road camping in colorado. There's no way I would think about taking a Tundra on the trails I am on.

Is the current 4Runner got the V8? If so I'd hang onto it.

I can echo most people who say that the 5th gen feels so much more sluggish in comparison to the 4th gen. Braking is less responsive. I also feel like the fit and finish of my 5th gen is off in many places that my 05 is not. For instance, when I run my finger across the the seams where the bumpers align to the front and rear fenders, they're not as even and symmetrical on all sides as they are on my 4th gen.

It's a great vehicle, don't get me wrong, but I find myself enjoying driving my 4th gen much more.

I like my 5th gen more than the 05 SR5 I used to have. I think the finishes on the 5th are nicer, there are fewer unnecessary oddball features ( burger tray, garbage bag holder), and it is more spacious with better defined, more usable storage spaces. It is certainly more truck like, which I prefer, both driving wise and in exterior design.

my 06 is a v6. I would like to have a little more room...but not having a payment is really nice as well.


I've owned this runner since it had 60K miles. Its just at the point where It could use some routine MX and if I'm looking at getting something new anyhow then why do it.

Dealer offered me 3500 on trade in which I thought was way way low.

If I get a tundra itll have to have a cap on the back. Luckily I dont really commute and almost all my driving is either highway cruising or farm/ranch roads fields. I could use a bed sometimes but my other option is to get a decent trailer to use as needed and still keep manueverability of runner.

My kids are young. 1.5 and 3. I looked at tohoes and suburbans but didn't like them or the price.

If I keep it I'll probably look at doing slight lift...already have 5100's. and replacing a lot of wear components like CVA's, tie rods etc...

I do like the look of the newer 4runners but have't looked at em much.
