Ok, so i have a 98 4runner with 4wd (no locking rear diff.) . I like to use the 4wd hi in the rain for added traction and improved handling in case of an emergency situation. When i take turns tho, especially like in the parking lot the wheels seem to bind alot. I dont think this is very good, and i want your opinion...is the rain enough to let the wheels slip and prevent any damage to the system?? I usually turn it off in the parking lot or what not to help, but soemtimes i need to make a turn and turning the 4wd on/off gets annoying. So...is the binding really bad or not in the rain?? THANKS a lot....

not sure but i don't think the pre 99 models have that "multi-mode 4wd" if not, its a part time system and i don't think it should be run on pavement, even in the rain. i don't think wet pavement will allow enough slippage during tight turns. my 94 has the 4wdemand system (part time) and will bind if i try to run on road. i wouldn't recommend using 4wd on road imo.
Your '98 has no center differential. Its part-time 4WD should be used only on slippery surfaces (snow, loose dirt, etc.) which permit wheel slippage to occur without stressing the drive train.
If you continue to use 4WD on pavement (even wet pavement), you are risking expensive damage to CV joints, U-joints or the transfer case.
