4WD Engagement Question

I would say, no, not normal to take that far to engage.
I have a '99 3.4 std and it's almost instant, like maybe no more than one turn of the tire or less. If it takes that long to hook up it's pretty well useless in getting you out of a situtation in a hurry.
Sometimes it will take longer to disengage, but usualy letting off the throttle for a moment lets it pop out of 4x
I bought a 99 with a bad motor it had sat for a few years before that after repairs 4wheel drive was slow to engage sometimes it took going from forward to reverse to get it to engage . I just kept using it every time I drove trk

I would agree that it seems abnormal.
If mine for whatever takes a moment more than usual to switch, I just accelerate, or ease off the gas for a moment and it engages and then I am back off or jump back on. Let us know!

Update
So, I spent the better part of the day at the service station/sales joint where I bought the car. The 4wd engagement issue was due to a front left tire very low on air due to a nail. This also created the feeling of poor alignment and an off center steering wheel. All fixed. I also replaced the dash AC control unit since the old one had a failed backlight on the LCD (limited model with auto climate control). I also felt pulsing in the brakes so we replaced all pads, front and rear, rotors and drums. The pulsing is better but not totally gone. If it does not get better after 100 miles and everything seats, I will have rotors replaced with OEM parts. Last thing is I ordered new leather front seat covers. Those should arrive and be installed in mid October.

I had similar issues with the braking system. When I purchased my 4runner I knew the brakes were warped. I replaced rotors and pads which fixed it when I didn't use the brakes very much. When I had to use them more than normal, they would still felt like a pulsing or slight shaking again. Finally I decided to upgrade my brakes with the Tundra brakes (231mm) and I'm pleasantly surprised how much better they feel and do not have any symptoms from before. They feel much more secure in braking and haven't had any issues so far. Worth every penny of the $300 I spent. Some have done it for less though.

You could have just replaced the bulb for $1. Very easy to do, did the car dealer/service station really suggest replacing the entire AC control unit or am I misunderstanding?

For future reference, the bulbs can be replaced to fix that issue - much cheaper than buying the unit: 99+ LTD Auto CC Light Replacement - YotaTech Forums

Glad they did you right and tried the bulb first, I thought I must have not understood the whole story.
