4WD issues

I drive a 2001 sr5 4x4 and currently have been getting quite a bit of snow where I live. Thus 4x4 is essential to my daily commute. However, I was going through a thick batch and got stuck causing me to go into 4lo and running high rpms. In the midst of getting myself unstuck. I didn't start hearing a weird blowing sound from the engine (almost like a missing bearing or something) and the 4x4 stopped working. It was still engaged, the sensor showed everything to be fine, but everytime I gave it some gas, It would just rev and wouldn't go anywhere. 2wd works just fine however.

Disclaimer: pretty inexperienced with mechanical stuff. Was just curious if someone could give me an estimated diagnosis and if it's easy enough to DIY with some YouTube vids.

I read two different problems in this post.

First, vacuum hose damage in the ADD system is where I would start looking.


The whooshing sound is the system trying to pull a vacuum on what is probably an open system. Either the hoses are damaged or have been pulled out of their connections. Without vacuum, the front axle will not engage, and you will have 2wd only.

Second, if it's reving and no power is going to the front or rear, the transfer case has gotten knocked into neutral.
