The reason I felt it was working harder is the engine was SO loud. It made me worry a bit.

right, I understand. I was just pointing out that it wasn't working hard, only revving higher.
likely it sounded worse than it was, if the fan was spinning up. they can sound like a tornado when the revs get up there.

Definitely. And thinking about it more in depth, it seems to me to make sense that the rpms would be higher, hence more torque for pulling power should be provided.

Check me if I'm wrong but isn't the 5th gear not available in 4lo also? So your potential "top speed" in 4 lo will be even lower?

It will also help if you change the fluids in the transfer case also, then do then do the engaging of the 4lo n cdl. I can go in and out of low in seconds.

Couple of things going on there.

(1) At lower speeds (and presumably away from traffic) there's no wind and other noise so it sounds louder.
(2) The transfer case starts to make an audible whine over 15mph that gets louder as you go faster. You couldn't have missed it, but maybe passed it off as part of the "engine noise".

FWIW, I don't like to go more than 20-25 mph in low range.

Sounds exactly like what was probably going on. Great info, thanks all. I think I can chalk this one up to going a little fast and actually not even needing to use low at the time I did. Live and learn!
