4wd questions....

I purchased my used 4runner with no owners manual (DOH)... 2 questions.

1. To switch to 4wd hi, am I supposed to be park/neutral? Or moving?

2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 4wd hi seems to be the same as AWD. Does this mean that it can be left on ALL the time? And- if I did not come across any situation which would make the wheels spin in snow/ice/rain/whatever, would the gas mileage not be the same as 2wd? Thanks!

1. You can be in neutral or moving ( straight, not turning)
2. IIRC 4wd can be left on all the time but takes a toll on the mileage (2WD saves gas vs 4WD) as for a more detailed explanation of 4WD vs AWD

You must have a V6, which has the option of 2WD. The V8 and many other vehicles only have 4Hi/4Lo. I rarely use 2WD, it doesn't seem to make a difference in mileage, just allows the rear wheels to spin when it rains. I think there's a max speed for switching from 2WD to 4Hi, I don't usually do it on the highway. Switching to 4Lo should be done stopped in neutral.

Any speed below 62 mph (100 kph) you can engage Hi-4, if you engage above 62 you will get beeping until you slow down. Yes you can keep Hi-4 on all winter but there will be a slight MPG difference.

In the winter I keep Hi-4 on all the time. If the snow gets deep or if you just want to have fun with wheel spin, lock the center differential (one of the buttons on the left below the vent). Locking the differential also inhibits traction control.

For Lo-4, first have the vehicle in Hi-4, shift into neutral push and turn knob to 4-Lo. Once drash light blinking stops put it in gear and go.
