4x4 PSA: Use it or lose it monthly reminder

I just did it in my driveway. There's not a need to be in the dirt generally to put it in 4Lo. I did see the post about soft sand but again, there usually isn't a need for that.

Correct. 4low is just another set of gear ratios. Its the lockers you don't want to use unless the wheels can slip.

You can do it with lockers on pavement as well, just keep it in a straight line. Rear locker is more forgiving than a front and will cause the tires to chirp when turning. But best not to turn if possible with a locker engaged. Unless your axle can handle it.

I had a Detroit locker in a 14 bolt rear end on my old 78 Chevy crawler years ago.

Learning more every day about my 4Runner - I'm in the understanding the differential lock mode only locked the differential between the front and rear, not the left/rights. My previous suv was a Grand Cherokee and in 4wd mode 1 wheel in the front and 1 wheel in the back would spin at any given time so just the front/rear diff was locked.. That's still the case with a 4Runner right? Or are truly all the differentials locked (3 I believe) when I press that little lock button?

Yes. Stock, most just have the center diff lock. Some, but not all (Tail Editions I think?) came with a rear locker also.

Yes, with only a center locking diff, you are 2 wheel drive. One front, on back.

There would be an additional switch if you have a rear locker.

To my knowledge, and I'm still learning about the 4Runner, 4th gen 4Rs never had the option for a front or rear locker. They came standard with the Torsen center lockable diff and that's it. Therefore, the front and rear differentials are open.

The '09 Trail Editions 100% had a rear locker. None were ever available with a front locker, though.

Use it or lose it!

I'm actually looking at losing it. At least the electronically shifted version. Thinking of doing the swap to a twin-sticked FJ case.

It's an excuse to wheel once a month ... I don't see that as a bad thing when the wife asks why I want to go up to the hills.

Great thread...

Missed the March reminder so here is the...

April reminder.

Stay healthy and 6 feet apart.

thanks you too!

Though I did see a story that it is now supposed to he more than that. Apparently they tested the air in the hallway outside closed doors of quarantined patients and the virus was there....stay safe people.

T-case already worked, we've had snow here in Denver the last 2 days...

mine engages and disengages 4wd with a thunk 90% of the time, is this normal, or should i get worried?

Mine has a thunk also, but only if I'm putting stress on it at the time of the shift. To minimize this, I make sure that I am going in a straight line and not accelerating or decelerating, and let off the gas just as I make the shift. That's what I do on dry pavement… But off-road of course is a little bit different.

mine engaged 4wd smoothly before..even at 40mph, when last did you change your differential fluids?. are all your tires the same type, thread and age?

Tires are all new with less than 6000 miles, same type same size. Time for a rotation though.

I am planning to change out the fluids at 60,000 miles which is coming up shortly.

Mine finally worked today. Been trying since I got it in Feb. Went out on a long trip up some FSR all in 4hi and center diff lock when needed. They work no prob. Tried 4lo a few times on the trip but we didn't really need it and it was long.

Day after I went around flipping in and out at stops and while I was in a car wash but nothing.

Today I just drove to the gas station for chips and on the way back tried it while stopped going up a small hill. Flipped the switch rolled a little bit and the light stopped flashing for the first time ever. I screamed in my car I think the guy mowing the lawn thinks I'm pshyco.

Been about eight months since I've been anywhere near an area where I could get my tires into some dirt so other than using 4hi in my V6 I haven't really exercised my t-case in a while, that is up until yesterday when I got to hear that satisfying clunk dropping in to 4lo and bouncing around some clay and limestone boulders here in middle Tennessee. One advantage working in construction, lots of off-road time before the site gets paved as well as an occasional chance to do some roosting when noone else is around.
