My Alpine SPS-510's showed up today and I decided to install using the existing speaker 4" speaker mounts. i know there is a kit that is sold which makes this easier but i had the time and the tools so wanted to use what i had. the install worked out great and no issues with the window hitting the speaker magnet. they roll down all the way!
Here are the parts/tools i used:
heat gun
putty knife
japanese pull saw
dremel with cutting bit
soldering iron
RV window gasket seal
Parma Servo tape (double sided super sticky stuff for RC applications)
first thing was to remove the old speakers from the plastic mount. they are glued in so i used the heat gun to warm up the glue and a putty knife to free them from the mount.
then i took the japanese saw and removed the riser on the mount:
the hole is still too small for the speaker housing so i used the dremel to make it bigger. i lined the template up and set it so the bottom would not need to be cut since too much plastic would have been removed. i wanted to save the original wiring connector so i had to remove that for now, the cut could have been cleaner and slightly smaller but the RV gasket filled the gap nicely.
after putting the RV window gasket on i laid down the speaker template so i could drill the holes for the mounting ear screws. the speaker wire connectors themselves are oriented towards the top of the door.
speaker fit nicely, just make sure the ears are not in the way of the mounting plate holes
the speaker screws were a little long so i drilled out relief for them on the door:
since the old gasket was a little thin and some tore off i rolled up some more RV gasket and stuck it on the door following the original pattern. this should keep a nice tight fit for a long time and seal it off nicely.
i then cut off the old wires and used my soldering iron to remove the wire from the posts of the harness and soldered up the new wires. i used the RC servo tape to attach the harness back to the mounting plate.
ran a quick sound test and all was well so i put it all back together.
