5 Speed Manual Pops out of 1st Gear.. Hmmm??

My 94 is a 5 speed and when I'm just barely taking off in first gear it suddenly pops out back into neutral. It does this quite often and I pretty much just hold my stick shift in first so it won't pop out. Doesn't seem to do it after I'm going 15+ MPH, only at very low speed when I'm letting out the clutch. I've heard of other people complaining about the same issue. Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

One possibility (and the one you should hope for) is that the shifter seat is bad, and the suggestion above will solve the issue.

The other possibility is that your transmission is starting to go (well, the syncros).

My original transmission (when I bought the truck) always needed to be held in 1st, and would pop out of 3rd if you let off the gas. I ended up replacing the transmission.

Thanks for the info guys.. I ordered the new seats and will install them and let you know how it goes.

If it is the syncros are those easily replaced or is that an entire tranny rebuild?

Mine used to pop out of third and sometime 4th.. Seems to have gone away and now it only pops out of first.. Hmmmmm?

I had a problem years ago with popping out of 2nd gear, turned out to be a shift fork. At least that's what I remember from that situation oh about 12 years ago. I pulled the tranny myself and dropped it off at a local transmission shop. Cost me about $300 and has been doing just great (still have and drive the truck).

I don't think it's the synchros/gearset. Mine has been dooing the same thing, if it's the synchros, it should pop out under load, mine will come out after coasting.
There is a detent ball/spring that holds the shift shaft in gear, mine were missing.
Look under the pass side of the gearbox, there is a steel plate that carries the rear bearings. There are 3 plugs with allen heads, remove the lowest one, if there is a spring behind the plug, replace the plug, & move on.

Replaced them to the tune of ~$3.00 & 90% of the problem is solved. Still happens rarely, & i think the Marlin products are the solution, what the hell, for $16.00 on a 15-20yo vehicle you can't go wrong. I'll post when they come in.

I've having the same issue with my 95, 1st seems to be the only issue. Are these springs accessed from under the vehicle or do I have to pull apart my center console?
