5 speed trans shifts too early

Anyone else have the problem that their tranny shifts into OD under 40 mph bogging down the engine? Ive found that if i drive at 34-36 mph it will upshift and the rpms drop to 950 or 1000 giving that bogged down feeling. most cars and trucks dont upshift into OD until you hit 40 to prevent this. Is there any way to adjust that on the 4R? Its annoying as all get out.

Normal. Around town I leave it in 4 on the shift selector. The trans shift logic is made to dump it off into OD asap for CAFE. You can pull the neg battery cable for 30 min and let it relearn your driving if something has changed in your driving style or you have moved. But if you do a lot of city driving it will just re-learn it.

Mine does it all the time. It can still "pull" but acceleration is slowish.

Sometimes, if I'll be under 35-40mph for a while, I'll just put it in "4" so it won't go into fifth. The tranny is just doing what it was designed to do. I do like having the ability to put it in whatever gear I want, though! A lot of vehicles don't have so many choices... "D" or "L" in some cases. Others have an OD lock-out button... a nice feature, but it's the same as just bumping the lever to "4" in our case. That's probably why "4" and "D" are next to each other in the 4Runner.

I'd love to tell it not to shift into OD until 40, thats the best option, my old SUV has an OD OFF button for 3rd that I only used for towing the boat uphill, I imgine thats what the side to side shifter on the 4R is for.....

So wiping the ecu memory will help this huh?

I noticed an improvement when wiping the ECU, a few weeks after I got my truck used (to install new headlights). I also reset it when switching to a larger tire size which helped a bit with weird ATX shift points.

I may try using 4 around the city, that's a good idea to prevent the OD short-shift it sometimes does when darting around traffic especially in this hilly city (SF). It's never bothered me that much, but i do notice it.
