5% Tint and getting pulled over by the Police?

I live in CA and really would like to do a 5% tint all around the car, but I'm wondering if this is a bad idea in terms of negative police attention or possibly getting ticketed and wanted to hear your thoughts.

Also, should I get this done at the dealership or go with a local shop?

Depend on the cop I have been pull over with 5% but he let me go with a warning and said they looked good and didn't bother him but our cop will give me a ticket that was in CA now I live in NC and its Legal to have 5% on a suv/truck even the front window can be tinted

Most dealer don't want to have anything with tint because if your under the legal limit they don't want you running back to them because you got a ticket so most dealer don't do it if they do you will get 35% go to a local shop

I'm in the military and lived in CA, NC and TX. The only ones that ever gave me trouble was state troopers. Most city or county cops don't care to much from what I've seen. Most of the time get warnings, I've only had one give me a ticket but I was being rude because he was lol. I always find a shop that does vehicle and residential windows, they usually have more experience. Just remember that when it comes time for inspection you have to take it off then get it retinted unless you get lucky.

Depends on state, I've gotten 2 tickets in 6-7 years for tinted windshield in FL. Just like KKsRunner stated the only law enforcement that seems to care is state troopers. If I just had 5% tint, I don't think I would have been bothered it was the windshield tint that got me.

If you want to give cops a great reason to pull you over, go for it. If you want to make it really hard to drive at night, go for it. If you want to gamble with your money and risk having to pay a ticket and/or pull it off, go for it.

One of my previous vehicles had 20% on the front windows and I was pulled over while passing through another state. The vehicle was registered in my home state of OR (where it was close to legal) and I was driving through UT (where it was very illegal). I didn't even get a warning, UHP just explained that my tint was too dark for their state and let me go. I strongly suspect it was really just a reason to pull me over and check me out on a slow Sunday morning.

Since then, my cars have always been legally tinted. Its not worth the trouble.

I think this is very dependent on the area you live. I know in FL you could get a ticket for each window in violation. If you are stopped I'd make sure to roll all the windows down since the whole point of the tint laws is so the officers could see on the other side of the glass. Super dark tint isn't fun driving at night in case you've never experienced it first hand.

I live in NC and just had the front windows done as well at a local shop. 35% is legal for front and if you go lower you just need to remove it before inspection. The owner of the shop has 5% on his front windows and removes them every year, and has never had a cop issue. He asked me if I knew a guy (for inspection), I could go lower, otherwise, keep them legal. Rule of thumb with cops though, your windows should be down before they reach your window regardless of tint.

I have been pulled over by the CHP and was issued a fix it ticket. I had to get the tint removed from the front window and then go to a CHP office to get it signed off.

The limit is 35% in NC. If it measures under 32% you can be ticketed.

Always go to a local shop, trust me! The dealership is all about the bottom dollar, so they will use the cheapest film and the cheapest installers possible. Then they will charge you 2 to 3 times what a shop will.

Also in my personal opinion, 5% is too dark. It looks cool and its not bad during the day but you will be regretting it when you're trying to back up in a dark parking lot at night . I did 20 all around and I think its just right.

I think the pros out weigh the cons for dark tint

Tint reduces heat, glare and a clear view into your from 4runner for criminals

However, in some parts of southern Cali the cops are real strict about it. They are looking for it.

In New Mexico the police are dealing with so many uninsured, DUI and other major issues that tint is the least of their worries. Most police cars I see here have dark tint on the patrol cars!

Rolling the windows down when pulled over is always a good idea

If its illegal and if you get hassled, take it like a man and don't whine that "cops have nothing better to do etc"

The darker the tint the more you are reducing your ability to see out the windows and while cars with headlights may still be easy to see a person, animal etc will not. While I do have 35% on the front (so I cant say all tint is evil) I would strongly suggest you stay away from 5% and certainly do not tint your windshield.

I agree with going to a local shop, you'll probably have to pay cash due to the shade of tint you're wanting. Personally I had 20% 3M crystalline film applied all around except the windshield and I love it.

I don't think most cops care too much, and if you get it so that you can still partially see through the windows, you should be fine. My cop friends tell me in about 6-7 times out of 10, if you're nice and respectful to them, they'll let you go with a warning.

When I'm driving behind a police officer and they see the Trail hood-scoop in the rear view mirror...they pull over for me....and then I tint their windows.

Many states allow different percentages for front and rear. I'd check to see what's allowed in your state. Never heard of doing a windshield except for the strip at the top. Another thing to consider (other than piling up tickets) is if you are in an accident and your windows are over tinted; you could be in big trouble.
