5100 + stock coils or OME 884

sway a way was bought by AFE (advance flow engineering) they're currently rebranding sway away as advance suspension engineering
Thanks for the info. I talked to Wheelers today and they should have their new springs around January. They will be the exact same specs as the saw coils were...

I think i will probably plan on running stock springs since I plan on eventually going to icons down the road. That is unless someone comes up with info that the stock springs will coil bind when set at 2.5"

If you're going to icon, save your money and just stay with the Bilsteins. The 884 gave me around 2in of lift in the front with the lowest 5100 setting. The extra height comes from a top plate spaced that you can buy from Toytec.

if he was going to send the money on Icon's he should pony up a little bit more and get King's if he wants the best ride he can get

So I really want to have a little less forward rake then stock... it seems I have a couple options...

Bilstein set at 2.5" with stock springs, saw coils or superflex 2" which actually gain about 2.5".... that would keep it about the factory rake... the saw coils will probably net around 2" so with the front 2.5" Billie lift, it would slightly reduce forward rake while possibly still maintaining enough rake for extra load, passengers or pulling a trailer.

Billies with 884 spring. See what lift it gives me and then add a 1/4" top spacer if needed to give approximately 1/2" more lift. Or the regular top spacer kit which they claim 3/4". I feel this route would probably give the best ride quality, just need to research all the cons to top spacers...

I don't want to do the diff drop it if can be avoided. I need to research on that. Is the general concensus it is needed OVER 3" or anything approaching/around 3"?

I want to fit 255/80/17 st maxx tires so probably the more lift the better....

Thoughts, input...

Also whatever route I go right now will be how it is for at least another 4 years or so for the wife. So even though I plan on upgrading in 4 or 5 years, I don't mind spending another $200 on front coils if it gives it a more comfortable and controlled ride.

I'm thinking of doing something similar. I just purchased a '15 TE and installed a flat BajaRack and 275 K02's.

I spoke to Scott at ToyTec yesterday and told him what my driving conditions would be - mainly gravel, some trails to get to our rock climbing locations and also as a daily driver. Nothing like rock crawling. Plus I wanted to keep within a budget.

He recommends Billies with the 884 or ToyTec 2.5 springs and for the rear - Saws. All of which are in stock.

I'm thinking that's the way I'll go. Plan on purchasing late Jan. I'll post pics when I install them.

I'm only looking for a 2-2.5 lift.

Appreciate all the good info on this site. This thread has been helpful.

Just reviving this old thread to see if the OP or anyone else can post pics of recently lifted rigs? Im considering a lot of the options mentioned here (2-2.5" lift up front and 1.5-2" lift in the rear through various options).

I have still not figured anything out. I know I have decided to order 884s and the toytec super flex springs but not sure what I need to do with the 884s and the bilsteins up front to make sure and get 2.5-3"... Should I order top plate spacers? Set the bilsteins at .85 or leave them at stock... What will achieve at least 2.5"????

Anyone anyone anyone?

Answers seem to range from 2" to 2.5" from 884s alone

Who has 884s and what did you get out of them?

Seems the logical thing would be to just set the 5100s at the 0.85" setting so you don't have to spend the money for a spacer. If you get too much lift out of that, remove it and reinstall it at 0". It's nothing that can't be accomplished on a Saturday afternoon. Problem solved.

I'm not running the 884's, but I do have 885's in a similar setup. I have my 5100's set at 0 because I only wanted 2" of lift. And with my front bumper and winch I needed a little stiffer spring. I am looking at exactly 2" of lift up front. If you set your 5100's at 0.85" you will end up at or near 2.85" total lift up front. Here is mine unloaded before I added the rear bumper. The rear end is what Toytec +10% springs will look like with no rear load.

No updates unfortunately. Been very busy with other projects and family. Haven't made any progress....

Can anyone comment on what was implied earlier about losing suspension travel by running the 5100s at 2.5" with stock springs? Surely bilstein wouldn't make them with that setting if it was going to cause coil bind...

I did the oem coils at 2.5. Had no worries about coil bind. The springs dont have as many coils as the heavier duty springs so when preloaded, there is still as much or more space than heavier springs.

However, I dont really reccomend it. First, preloading the spring doesnt really add much stiffness. In fact from a scientific standpoint, it is irrelevent whether it has preload. That only applies to a progressive coil, where the preload would "cancel out" a coil or two. Now I will say from experience that preloading does seem to make a very slight difference, but I think its only because you are no longer using the first inch of load that had been used/flexed for years prior. you are almost using a "new" section of load.

The main reason I don't reccomend it is that the stock coils are just plain soft. I honestly have no idea how people can drive with them. they make the truck dip a good two inches on a bump that the truck would just float over with heavier coils.

5100's @ .85 with moog FJ 4x4 coils give about 2.5" and feel pretty damn good for the money. I can't imagine going softer and moog says they are 650#. I paid $29 bucks shipped for the coils from amazon (the returns section).

Recently put on 884s at 0" with Bilstein 5100s and they ride like a dream especially with aftermarket UCAs and a good alignment (caster >3.0). Used to have 5100s set at 0" with stock coils and that wasn't as firm as it is now. Vastly prefer the 884/5100 setup.
