5th Gen 4Runner Lift Buyers Guide

Canadian SR5 Premium

It looks really good. Much better than the US SR5 that had the mommy wagon bodywork.

I've seen several around here, and always wondered if they were some weird dealer option to turn an SR5 into a Trail-looking truck, turns out they were Canadian.

Neat.

Suspension question

Hi there T4R friends. I'm brand new to the Toyota 4Runner and I have been lurking around for a couple weeks trying to learn as much as I can from the forums. I have a 2016 sr5 premium and thinking my choice of suspension will be the billsteins 5100 up front at 2.5 and 1.5 inch spacer in the rear. What I have gathered from reading through the threads is that I will need new UCAs if I go over 1.75 My questions would be 1. Is this a decent set up to start with and 2. Any recommendations for UCAs specific to this set up?

Thank you!

Oh boy here we go. I will preface this by saying I am a complete newbie when it comes to lifts, leveling etc. I read this whole thread and searched( maybe not correctly) but am confused.
So I spoke to a rep from Toyota he today. My simple question was I want to keep my Xreas lift the front so that it sits level and matches the back , a nice clean look. I have a 2016 Limited Edition. I gave him all my this information. He states that my only option was front spacers. I gathered that from the info I have read from this forum in particular the 5th gen lift link. He tells me that according to his measurements (I assume he is reading a stats sheet) that my 4Runner sits 2 inches higher than the front. So he recommended toytech 2" front spacers. So I had him order them. Now I have doubts since many posts have said that it isn't an equal 1:1 ratio. I'm concluding that if he sold me 2" spacers that the front would be raised higher than the rear then? Right? The part number I got was #22953. Item number TAC2 according to the invoice.
Can anyone help a brother out please. So much information for me to digest. Did he order me the correct spacers for the front?
Again I apologize for the stupid question. I just want to know if I should trust this guy with his calculations on what I want to achieve.

Please help me.

Thanks for any responses.

He's correct about using spacers. The confusion is that the spacer size and lift amount may be different. A spacer that is physically 1" will provide closer to 2" of lift in the front (not exact). So company A might be saying 1" spacer lift when its really 2" of lift and company B might say 2" spacer lift when it's actually 2". You may want to email them to confirm or just stick to what other's have done, making sure you're looking at the same manufacturer. Another consideration is that some spacers, like the toytec, preload the front spring, which could result in a harsher ride. Spacers that mount on top of the coilover assembly, like daystar, retain the factory ride, just higher.

Bofa thank for the great info!! I didn't think about the pre-load vs. top spacer aspect with ride quality. I will clarify with them what I have. dang it maybe should have went with daystar. Aside from ride quality do you see any other differences such as safety, wear and tear on system etc. have a feeling I might be returning these for some daystars as I see lots have been using them. My naivety had me thinking that since toytech specializes in Toyota parts that it would be fine. Thanks again.

Would love to get a basic lift on my 2014 4runner trail premium. Just starting to off road more since I'm still a college kid. My suspension already has 60k... is this a good time to replace. What is a good suspension lift that's between 300-800? Looking at revtek, Rancho, and bilstein. I want a semi easy kit to diy. No shop necessary besides alignment which I'll have done at my dealer.

I can't sleep

Hi guys.
Just installed new nitto ridge grapplers 285/70r17s. The tires rub about 3/4 through a turn. Need a lift asap and I Have the money just don't know which route to go. I've read all 28+ pages of lift buyers guide and multiple threads. I'm budgeted to 1k-2k. I was thinking about bilstein 6112, icon stage 2.5 rear, and OME 2895 springs. I want a leveled lift, no rub, and a good ride. It's just stock now but I will add rack bumper winch etc later. Or should I just go 5100 and save for other upgrades ladder, gobi rack, armor, winch, front and rear bumper etc. HELP ME SLEEP PLEASE

Geez, that's a pretty big tire to run without a lift haha. 32.7" in size... you are right there on the brink of someone who would be considering a re-gear too depending on what they do with the truck.

Ur kinda got a cart before the horse theme going on with your needs lol.

If this is just a city truck then you can get away with 5100s, and its going to ride just fine on the street. Does just fine off-road too if you don't drive too fast or just like to crawl.

Anything 2.5 is awesome... you could go with a 6112 and a ICON setup too, its a much higher end option that will end up riding much nicer on all terrains, obviously excelling in performance off-road. Even for a city goer its hard not to smile when rolling over speed bumper either.

A true threaded coilover gives you a lot of fine tuning capability, the 6112 has pre-set perches that make for a better set-it-and-forget it type deal, or just has less maintenance or setup headache. Pick your poison. Personally if I was going to go with the ICON I would spring for the RR with CDC, having tuning ability is huge. If not I would just get the 6112 and save the cash unless you just had to have a threaded coil.

That said, if you get the shocks/spring combo of your choice now and pick the right stuff, by the time you get "ladder, gobi rack, armor, winch, front and rear bumper" its going to by time to rip it all off because you are going to be in desperate need of spring range changes... that said, you can re-use the shock of your choice, but you will double up on springs and labor twice, regardless of the route you pick.

You can make compromises now, but your truck will either ride a bit stiff/chattery/bucky off-road now, or be all squishy after mods if you dont want to tackle spring range changes twice...

You can run 285/70/17 without a lift (I do). Your rubbing is most likely either coming from the front fender liners or the mudflaps. There is a simple adjustment you can do to the fender liners to pull them forwards and away from the tires and you can use heat gun to warm and reshape the mudflaps to get you a bit more space. You can also remove them completely.

You might as well fix the rubbing now otherwise it will still rub when lifted and you compress the suspension.

The rubbing is coming from the backside of the tire. Not the front for the fender. Is there anyway to move the tires forward into to front fender more?

You need to do a fender liner mod. Google it. essentially you remove the bolts on the fender liner, push the liner forward. drill some new bolt holes and reinstall your bolts. then shave off the excess inner bumper.

takes about 15-20 minutes. you'll still rub at flex and lock in reverse, but it will be driveable.

I just installed Bilstein 6112's front today and 5160's rear with Icon rear coils. looking forward to no more rub as it was annoying, but not inhibiting.

This was mine after I pushed the liner forward, got 285/70/17 general gralbber at2's. I trimmed the liner at the tire shop before driving it home; stock height.

I have the same tire setup and run an Icon stage 2 lift. It is more expensive than some of the other options, but top of the heap when it comes to performance. I wheel 5-10 times a year so the majority of my driving is street which is another reason I enjoy the Icons. They still maintain a firm ride on-road so you don't feel like you are driving a boat, but have great off-road manners as well.

Something else to think about with that tire size is your alignment. Without UCAs, it will be darn near impossible (from what I hear) to bring your front to proper alignment. Just something to think about.

Recommendations

Hey guys...I need some advice. I'm pretty new when it comes to suspension systems. I have 2016 trail premium. I was planning on buying the black TRD wheels. I notice the front end is a little lower stock. I want to raise the front a little to give myself the option of a bigger tire if I go that route. I don't want a leveling kit or spacers, I want something that also serves more of a purpose for off-road. I don't really want a big lift and I would like to avoid effecting the KDSS. My thoughts were just shocks. Can certain shocks give me a decent lift? Again...I don't want nothing crazy, I just want have more clearance and look more aggressive. What is everybody's recommendation?

Bilstien 5100's can be adjusted to .85", 1.75" or 2.5" gives you room to grow!:naughty:
