5th gen 4Runner Moonroof problem

Hello, I have a question regarding the moonroof on my 2010 4Runner SR5. I bought this new, and have always noticed a rattle from the moonroof. I took it to the dealer while it was under warranty, and they said that the sunroof is fine, but a bolt was missing from roof rack bar. This of course didn't fix the problem, but I have not yet taken it back, as it is my only vehicle, and I too distrust the dealer. What I have now noticed is that when sitting in the vehicle, and pushing up on the front drivers side of the sunroof, there is no movement. However, when I push up on the front passenger side, the sunroof lifts close to 3/4" up and rattles. I can even see light our of the front corner under the sunroof. It is NOT leaking at this point, but I am thinking that this surely can't be good. Does anyone have any info on this before I try my luck again with the dealer?

It's in the repair manual on how to replace it and troubleshoot for a bad motor/cable but nothing on specific rattles.

From your description and the manual it may be one of these T25 Torx screws under the trim that are loose are missing. If not it could be one of the fasteners from the whole assembly which requires removing the headliner to find it(not easy to do)

Thanks for the response. I will take a look at this in the AM. I believe that this would be out of warranty, so I would like to give it a shot. I will let you know if I find anything.

I remember having a rattle noise from my sunroof one day. Turned out there was a small lubrication issue with the part that comes up via spring in the front, it didn't lift evenly so the cockeyed position made a rattle. Bothered me and the wife. Used a little wd-40 and it evened it out and haven't had a rattling problem since. Hopefully the problem for you is as easy to diagnose.

Thanks for the replies guys. So as it turns out, I opened the moonroof 1/2 way, and pulled back the black weatherstripping on the side, which revealed a loose hex screw. It appears that there is about 1/2 of travel for adjustment here, but the screw was loose, so the entire moonroof would rattle back and fourth. I would encourage ANYONE with a rattling moonroof on the 5th gen 4runner to check these hex screws. It took me about 5 minutes total, once I knew where to look. Thanks again for all of the help!:fro:

Thank God for this post. I got this thing rattling right above my head all the time. Driving me nuts!!!! Just started on my 2010 about 6mo ago. And I RARELY even use the thing. Wish it didn't have one to be honest. Thanx again.
