5th Gen 4Runner Off Road Toolkit

Hi Folks,

I'm going to make an assumption that many of you are like me and carry a huge toolbox every time we venture onto dirt. You never know what's going to happen so being prepared is key. I've used my toolkit multiple times while on trips. However, I know that 80% of the tools in the box are not needed.

Well fast forward to two days ago I bumped into a post on a 4runner group on Facebook about assembling a 5th gen specific trail toolkit. I think it would be great if the T4R community could contribute and add any input as needed. The doc is editable by anyone so feel free to add but please be respectful of the info already there. Lets crowdsource and get this thing built out!

I keep this on my truck. It lacks a few bigger pieces like a 19mm wrench but it works for me. At home I have a bigger craftsmen set

I haven't carried many tools yet. Don't know which ones I need the most. I just count on Extreme Luck (OP).
If I packed that list of tools I'd need those 700 # springs...

Here’s what we’ve come up with for our onboard tools;
Not in the picture below is a ½” breaker bar (doubles as lug nut wrench), 18” cheater bar, slide hammer for pulling out the front axle shafts, fluids, PB Blaster, rags, and a small can of ether for resetting tire beads. All these items are in our parts box.
In the pic is a full set of combination wrenches, 1/4" socket set, 1/2" socket set with extensions, hex socket for removing front diff. fill hole, front axle shaft socket, hammer, knife, crescent wrenches, pliers, channel locks, vise grips, combination screwdriver, center punch for striking front axle back in to place, duct tape, plenty of zip-ties, jumper cables, and probably a few things I forgot.

What's the front hub nut size, 35mm? Mines buried in my kit but it's not a bad thing to have if you need to swap out a cv. Pickle forks are rarely the appropriate tool but they've frequently gotten me out of a jam more than once.

So I recreated the toolkit in the Google Doc (for the most part). Using Harbor Freight’s house brand tools. Everything together including the bag was $103. This setup weighs probably 30 lbs vs my 70 lb full toolkit. Will test this setup over the next few months and add things as needed.

I added a hammer to that list. Very important. Maybe even a chisel set.

Nice! I just got back working on my truck and realized that for those of us who modified our trucks with parts from vendors in the US (Icon, Gobi, Baja Designs etc) we need to also add Standard sockets and wrenches to the mix. Guess that bag isn't going to be so light anymore!

Thanks for this! I spent about 10 minutes and $100 reproducing this exact toolkit at Harbor Freight. :reddance:

The only things I didn't get were the wrench set or the screwdriver kit. I already have several extra multi-bit racheting screwdrivers, and I have a GearWrench set (8mm-24mm!) that I'll throw in the bag when we go wheeling. I have since added some Vice Grips and assorted heavy duty zip ties.

I love this idea, thanks for this thread. I've actually been piecing together stuff for my tool kit since I bought my Rago Molle panels, have a first aid kit, a shovel, a tow strap, a flash light, jumper cables and a bunch of other random stuff, but have been thinking about a tool set as well. Definitely going to use this thread for reference. Thanks!

I've been using the toolkit for about 6 months now for regular vehicle maintenance, a rear bumper install and even my dual battery project. Never needed anything else!

I do not see the need for coolant. Water is usually carried and will work best in a jam.

Do we really need the full wrench set? I haven't looked through the 4R but I'm sure that its manly only 3-4 different sizes. Whats not could be handled with an adjustable.

Thanks for posting this. Since my job as a facility maintenance i usually carry a heavy load of tools that weight 70-80lbs tool bag. I know that in the near future I need to upgrade my front bumper and get a winch. But right now im praying that in case i get stuck that someone can pull me out in a jam. I need to supply myself with straps and other necessary tools. And also running a stock bumper is there a way I can hook up a D-ring up front?

I'm still building my toolkit out, but I found a socket set that checked all the boxes that I think is worth sharing (there are so many, and they are missing something, or have things you don't need). Quality manufacturer, mid-range price, metric only, 6mm-24mm standard and deep, with ratchet, extensions, and u-joint.

I ordered the 35mm deep socket, 5/8" spark plug socket, and 3/8"x1/2" adapter while I was at it.
