5th Gen Calipers

First Timer

First time replacing brakes - ever. Figured if I'm going to give this a try, why not do it with the 5th Gen to prevent seizing. Going to watch some YouTube videos on how to bleed the brakes.

Also, should I use pads for the 5th Gen or 4th Gen when using 5th gen calipers?

Could someone confirm that the two links below are the correct calipers:

Right Caliper

Left Caliper

I think I'll do the pads and rotors, since those are interchangeable for 4th/5th gen. If the calipers look bad I'll do those later, but I think they're doing alright for now.

The 5th gen front rotors are thicker than the 4th gen front rotors.
I don't know if the extra thickness will allow you to use 5th gen front rotors with 4th gen front calipers. If they don't bind or grab (meaning that they release fully) then you'll be OK.

If no one else knows the answer, then at least be sure to check your brakes when done, after some driving and once the pads have been fully bedded.

That is assuming that you can get the pads & 4th gen front calipers over a 5th gen front rotors. ( I don't know the answer). Just be prepared to possibly have an issue, or if you don't have an issue while or after installing it, to possibly need to also upgrade to 5th gen front calipers too.

Or if you have the funds, you can just upgrade the front calipers too, and then you KNOW you won't have any issues.

Regarding the rear rotors. 4th gen & 5th are the same thickness. However, the center hole in the 5th gen rear rotors is 2mm larger (IIRC), making the 4th gen rear rotors the "most correct" rotors to use, even with 5th gen rear calipers. However, according to [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION], because of how the rotors work (both hub centric & lug centric), you can safely use either 4th gen or 5th gen rotors on the rear of 4th gens.

I'm actually only looking to do the rears right now. The rear parts were all basically the same so I just stuck with the 4th gen stuff. I know the fronts are a different story but if I end up having to do those again I'll definitely do all 5th generation parts to avoid mismatching. Thanks for the info !

In the rear, I think that's fine, but the fronts are different rotors.

OK, thanks. So now its a matter of having to do trimming on the back plate thing to get 5th Gen Rotors to fit. :rockthrow:

I know how it is. The front caliper/rotor/pads was my first brake job. I'm doing the rears soon and it's still a learning experience.

Does anyone know where we can get the front calipers from? Rockauto is out of stock and I need to get my brakes replaced ASAP. I'd rather just do this upgrade before I buy 07 rotors and pads (I don't even know what size rotors I need so this makes it easier too)

I had a similar issue, Had to order one from rockauto and one from Autobrakecenter.com

Call them up.



Just finished painting both calipers last night. Doing 5th gen brake install tomorrow. I will post up in here.

Its a centric part number.. so they are the same.. comes in the same centric box, just different seller. one ends in 87 the other in 88.

The part numbers you have are correct.

The rear pads I used were ASP606.

I didn't worry too much about specifying part numbers since you can use any brake parts for the 5th gen. Every brand will be different part numbers as long as they are for the 5th gen 4Runners

I've just had bad luck with buying brake parts. I had one car where they changed the calipers mid year and I had to buy 3 different sets of front pads. It was crazy and I wasted so much money sending pads back... haha. So I'm always triple checking part numbers. Thanks so much for starting this thread for everyone!

Looks like everywhere is selling out of the front brake calipers! Does anyone have any other leads to where they could be in stock?

Autobrakecenter.com has like 6 pairs left. You know what is messed up after everyone returns their old calipers they will just rebuild 2008 calipers and sell them as 2015. I know people are doing it to get money back but you are fooling them and getting away with it. Your fellow forum members will spend money thinking its a 2015 caliper but it won't be and the problem will persist.

Autobrakecenter.com has like 6 pairs left.

I was going to buy from there but they raised up their prices.... they are $25-30 more than everywhere else. I can afford it but I just hate giving in to that haha. Oh and they won't price match.

finished up the 5th gen swap up front, and installed stainless braided lines. No too bad, too my time and went over everything. Also not pictured was the touch up i did to get rid of any surface rust.


Results, they feels 100 times better then before, smooth and responsive, but I believe there is still air in lines so im going to have it powerbled.

Excellent upgrade for braking overall.


I plan to regularly lubricate and grease the slider pins on the calipers as this seems to be partially the cause for the 4th gen calipers not functioning properly over time.
