5th Gen Calipers

Calipers came back into stock on Rockauto over the weekend, get them while you can! I already ordered mine haha.

Paint - Let's talk about that

Again with a paint question.

I know there has been some mention of it, and I think that's where I got the idea of using the G2 paint kit.
But are there other options being used to paint these calipers?
I came across this Dupli-Color paint.
And was also thinking of just using some high heat Rust-Oleum.

Anyone else tried or considered these options? I'm kind of just looking for an easier (lazier) way.

I used the duplicolor, this is my second time useing it. the first time I painted it right over old rusty calipers while on the truck. and it held up great for 2 years. Now ive used it on brand new clean calipers off the truck. for 20 bucks you get enough paint to do about 20 calipers. and its easy and quick enough, id redo it once a year if needed which you wont.

i used G2 kit. was just under $40 on amazon. was able to do a few coats no problem even after spilling half the container. its advertised as an epoxy paint; for me this is a once and done job. no way i'm doing this every year or two years.

with that said, Billynath's approach may pay off in the long run. if these 5th calipers dont hold up beyond a year or two, its time for replacement. i would imagine i would get mine rebuilt since i took the time to meticulously paint them, but who knows.

G2 system is not fast, easy or lazy, imo. by no means am i saying duplic-color is. your tradeoff is how much you care and how often you have to re-apply

Regular Temperature Rustoleum worked well. Clean with wire brush and apply 2 coats using a foam brush. If keeping the rust away is your goal, look no further. I used black

Does anybody else stock centric calipers. My right front pad is down to metal on rotor from the caliper being frozen. Went on rockauto to order and they have every caliper but the right front.

If you have one in your area, go to Avanced Auto Parts. They sell Centric brand parts. You probably won't have much luck online. You will have to go in. Then MAKE SURE you inspect the caliper before you leave to make sure it has the correct casting marks (correct part).

Thank you. What will the correct casting marks be for the 5th gen calipers. These are going on an 07

Autobrakecenter.com has like 6 pairs left. You know what is messed up after everyone returns their old calipers they will just rebuild 2008 calipers and sell them as 2015. I know people are doing it to get money back but you are fooling them and getting away with it. Your fellow forum members will spend money thinking its a 2015 caliper but it won't be and the problem will persist.

Agreed, bad karma - kind of sh1tty of people to return parts that will be bought by others looking to upgrade.

I would think they would find the difference during the rebuilding process, no?

That's my thought. The 5th gen caliper pistons are larger than the 4th gen, so the 5th gen caliper pistons won't fit in the 4th gen caliper body.

So if they tried to rebuild a 4th gen core using 5th gen parts, at some point, they would find that the pistons don't fit, and that would let them know that something is wrong.

I assume it's more likely that their process is to clean up all brake cores using whatever process they go though, then read the casting numbers to identify and sort the parts, then line them up to be rebuilt using the correct parts based on the case numbers. That would seem more logical to me.

For example, suppose a customer returns 4 cores, but gets the tags swapped so that they mislabeled and accidentally swapped the tags on left front and the left rear calipers.

If the rebuilder simply rebuilt them as tagged, then repackaged them and resold them as they were labeled when they came in, I suspect that they would have large numbers of inventory errors, and many upset customers.

I don't see how a company could succeed relying on that process. I would think that they would HAVE to check the casting numbers to positively identify a component. After all, when they sell the reman part, it's THEIR reputation that's on the line.

More likely is that compared to the number of caliper replacements on 4 runners, the people doing the upgrade swap are a small percentage and over the long run won't make much of a difference... especially as the 5th gens continue to age, so more and more 5th gen's get scrapped and have parts remanufactured. The upgrade crew might have put a slight supply shortage on the 5th gen replacements for now, but that should ease up over time.

Also, the remanufactures probably don't even care. The 4th gen cores will be remanufactured as 4th gen cores and resold to other 4th gen owners with failed calipers who don't upgrade. We all know there will be no shortage of failed 4th gen calipers!!!!

Just my $0.02.

Judge not, lest ye be judged, i know, but either way this is theft. If they send you a 14wa then you should be returning a 14wa.

Not that it would ever happen, but if you had to go to court on it, do you think the judge would rule for you or against in a law suit saying you returned the wrong part?

Just curious. Why are you guys choosing Centric over other brands?

The OP on this thread seemed knowledgeable about brakes, and felt that Centric has high quality standards. Others might also know. I'm not THAT knowledgeable about remanufactured brands.

But the OP spoke about wanting the high quality of the the centric parts (including rotors). It certainly makes sense that there are good remanufactures and poor ones.

That's the case with many parts including alternators, AC compressors, and more.

I think that the industry is large enough that they don't really care.
They sell you a brake caliper. They get another toyota brake caliper back.
They can clean up, process, rebuild and resell the new caliper for what it is.

Not many people (comparatively) are doing the upgrade, and I don't think the remanufacturer would care. They want cores to continue to have inventory to sell. I would assume that they also source cores from scrapped cars.

While I don't KNOW for sure, I'd be willing to bet that there are companies who buy salvage cars from insurance auctions, dis-assemble them, and sell off different parts as scrap, as used parts, and as cores to remanufacturing companies. I would image that it's a fairly large business in terms in dollars spent per year.

Peace to you too :D

I have a background in law enforcement and these things always catch my eye, so no insult intended, just making an observation ;)
