5th Gen Calipers

The 5th gen brake upgrade still has been one of the best Maintenance/mod upgrades i've ever done..

Its been a few months now and it still stops better then it ever did.. smoother then it ever did.. and more responsive then it ever was.

Also, a few good coats of caliper paint applied to the calipers before installing was an excellent decision and they still look new.

2. All the talk about reman calipers rusting and having to buy paint and spend a lot of time painting was the deal killer. I even have access to powder coating, but given the differing opinions on whether or not you need to disassemble them had me worried, and I didn't want to spend hours and $'s on a problem my existing calipers don't have.

powdercoating is expensive and PIA. I painted mine over two evenings, spent just an hour or two really. its not that bad, should not have been what was the deal killer.

I just did this swap. Thank ti the op for posting the part numbers, I went with all the same centric parts. Truck brakes great, let's see if these last longer. I kept warping 4th gen brakes every 15-20k miles.

I just did this as well on my 2005. My stock calipers were blocks of rust after 160k. Everything bolted right up. One question, whats the best way to get all the air out of the lines with the electronic servo brake assist? I still have a bit of a spongy pedal but at least now all the calipers are actually working...

Bought this 4runner about a month ago knowing it was going to need brakes. Glad I came across this forum and post about this upgrade. I had a terrible wiggle when deaccelerating and around 70 mph cruising. Completely gone now. Brakes like an absolute beast. Everything bolted on without issue. Wrapped this up on Tuesday. Went surprisingly smooth. The biggest headache was the Star Adjusters. Took a couple tries to get them adjusted correctly. In the process of dealing with them forgot to torque the rear left caliper and they walked themselves out after about 25 miles. Pretty embarrassed on that oversight and tow.

edit: Advance Auto accepted my 4th gen cores without question. What did everyone do with their old rotors?

if your calipers are sticking those old rotors are trash.

Noticed how much better my Wife's 2014 TEP's brakes were than my 2007 FJ. Found this thread and one like it in the blueroom. Did the upgrade just on the front alone and with braided lines all around it's some of best money spent!

Must paint the calipers if you bought the centric ones. They rusted in me in two weeks. I wire brushed them and painted them this weekend

if your calipers are sticking those old rotors are trash.

Just to be clear I replaced EVERYTHING to 5th gen. All brand new.

I do wish I had realized that there were 2 options for caliper part numbers for painted vs non painted. I ordered the 141 non painted ones ( though they do LOOK painted when you get them). Has anyone painted the calipers while theyre already installed on the truck? I am really not liking the idea of pulling all that stuff off again and making a mess again. To be honest, it was hard enough to find the time to do the install in the first place :/

It seems that the G2 pain system is the way to go as it is a brush on system instead of a spray on system.

Im hoping someone on here has been down this road and can offer some advice...

I've painted calipers on cars before. It's easy. Just make sure you mask everything off thoroughly and either brush or spray. I've done both. I took the pads out and crammed towels in the place. As with any painting, the time invested in prep will yield the best results.

is there something am missing, my truck is 2005 sr5 3rd row with 17'' rims

It won't be listed. It will fit though. You need to buy the calipers and discs. The pads are identical.

You should have painted the calipers. They'll be a nice shade of brown in a week.

Got all brake parts here for the upgrade, just waiting on the crown performance extended brake lines and then I'll upgrade mine next week! Can't wait, the brakes have seen better days being they have 101K on the factory pads, fronts are just about shot, but the rears could probably go another 30-40K, but why have old mixed with new. New all around it goes!

These brakes better be the shit and last another 100K!! LOL at least when I will need to do them again it'll be just pads and rotors. Since I live in AZ, these calipers should last even if they don't for those in the rustbelt.
