5th Gen Calipers

can i use 5th gen calipers on the front with 4th gen rotors? after "inspecting" my calipers visually they looked ok so i bought brembo 4th gen rotors for the front but during disassembly just now i found out my calipers are no good. if not ill just grab some 4th gen calipers

Has anyone experienced issues with just doing the 5th gen upgrade up front, leaving the rear 4th gen calipers?

Issues like what? I have seen/read that people who only do the front ones, suggest to do the rears as well. I guess if you are going to jump in the pool, may as well go in head first.

Soft brake pedal? Although those issues seem to be bleed procedure related.

My rear brakes are fine- have a steering shake/pulsation up front that I'm fairly sure is caliper related.

No issues here.
I have 4th gen rotors and calipers in the rear and 5th gen calipers and rotors in the front. I also switched all 6 brake lines to stainless steel.
 
Had the extra time this weekend to do the swap. Painted the calipers with G2 and added some stickers. I'm VERY happy with how they turned out. I used Carquest Platinum Painted rotors and Wearever Platinum Professional Ceramic pads all around. After all the discounts and rebates, I got all the rotors and pads for ~$200. I bought the calipers from Rock Auto. All in all, after core charges are refunded, discounts and so on, I'm ~$430 for this project, including the G2 paint and stickers.

I had some vibrations in my steering wheel and floorboard when slowing down from highway speeds. None of the OEM calipers showed signs of seizing, however the rear pads were worn down. I'm pretty sure they were the original OEM pads. After the swap, it brakes great! No vibrations at all!

How much are you guys having to bend the brake shield for the front rotor to fit?

I have my truck at a shop who won't do the work as they won't bend the brake shield as much as it needs to be (at all?)... they say the rotor won't move at all when rotor is on the hub.:ybrick:

I didnt have to bend mine much at all.

Did you need to bend only on the outer edge of the shield, or toward the hub as well?

Verified the part number appears to be correct- this look like the correct rotor offset?

Shop is telling me the rotor was hitting the caliper itself, not the shield. Not sure I believe them at this point.

I just did mine last weekend and there were 2-3 areas, mainly very top and very bottom, where I had to bend it ~1/4". Maybe they need to push the rotors onto the lugs more to get it to stop hitting the caliper?

Those will work as long as the right ones are in the box. Get a different shop.

Unfortunately no stampings on the rotor. I'll have it to another shop next week. Worst case I have them get a set of 5th gen rotors from Napa.

Calipers have the correct 14WA stamping on them.

I have an 07 4Runner Sport, I love it like the rest of you. the caliper issue was a thorn in my side.

Do yourself a favor, you owe yourself the piece of mind, do this upgrade. Everything bolts right up. I took it into the shop to get it done. The one thing the mechanic did mention was bleeding the brakes being a pain.

Below is the email I sent my mechanic after reading the entire thread. The only part I didn't include was the bleeding of the brakes. Many have complained about it, and a few have pointed out how to resolve it in the thread.

I also didn't upgrade to steel braided lines.


I'm serious if you have had brake issues and are tired of it, this is your chance to resolve all of your pain.

I have been doing a lot of research lately on my 4th Generation 4runner and the pulsating break issue. It seems most of the issue has to do with frozen/sticking calipers. I have not been happy with the brakes for a few years now. In the past the steering wheel would shake violently when braking and currently there is a pulsation of the vehicle when slowly coming to a complete stop. All of this prompted me to see if anyone cured this problem with some sort of Brake upgrade.
I went to the following site and read through this post a few times:

Below are the things that stand out to me the most.

Page 1 and 2 break down the parts number and the changes to be made.
• This modification needs to be on the Sport or Limited that has 17” wheels.
o Sport comes with larger backing plate so there is no need to cut or bend it.
• Same Brake pads are used on the 4th and 5th Generation 4runners
• Changes to be made to the brakes. Everything bolts right up with no issues.
o Place 5th Generation rotors on the front.
o Place 5th Generation Calipers on the front
o Place 5th Generation Rotors on the back (This will change as the post moves along I will explain below)
o Place 5th Generation Calipers on the back

Page 3 of the post. Question proposed. Noticed you have spacers, will the larges calipers fit with spacers removed.
• Removed spacers to determine if there would be any sort or rubbing with the bigger calipers.
o No rubbing of any sort.

• Refers to the 5th Gen rear calipers used on the following vehicles:
o Lexus GX460 (2010 - 2015)
o Lexus GX470 (2003 - 2009)
o 4Runner (2010 - 2015)

o The center holes differ by 1.9mm between 2010 (5th gen) and the 2008 (4th gen) models

Anyone experience side to side wiggle after doing the upgrade? I have about 10k miles since I did mine and experiencing a very mild case of it. It exists until I do 1 hard braking and it goes away. I assume the rotors have deformed a bit. Thoughts?

Don't tell me that! Exactly what I'm trying to cure with this upgrade. If the shake goes away after hard braking- could be pad deposits on the rotor- but at 10k miles I'd think you're past that.

I just picked up mine from having all parts installed today. Because my truck is a SR5- brake shield had to be bent quite a lot- but no issues with the parts.

Only have a few miles on the brakes so far- but seems very smooth.

Did you do the proper bedding procedure? I did so carefully, that I never let my brake pads touch a stopped rotor at any time for at least 2 weeks. I would slow to about 2mph then drift to a stop in neutral everywhere I went. It was a pain in the ass but I hate the pulsating brakes. It is essential to do the proper bedding procedure, however I'd say I went overboard for perfection.

I bedded mine for over an hour one night
