To be honest everyone has taken this way too seriously. I am from this area and have had countless talks/confrontations with tourists about this exact issue over the years. Nothing burns me more than to see out of state guys roll in with their side by sides or whatever and go ripping around wherever they please.
But that is not displayed here. Did wfo9 pull off the trail a bit? Sure. So did Lawndart in the above pic.
But in both instances it is very close to the road, and it appears to have been done in a calculated manner. Simply put, they are not the people we are worried about.
Also I would bet most the guys that are so quick to type "STAY ON THE TRAIL" on an internet forum, wouldn't actually approach someone in real life. Where you can actually make a difference. The thread is for cool pictures of 4runners in the mountains.
If you want to launch a campaign about staying the trail, I would respectfully request you go start another thread. **** knows we need something to break up the "will this tire fit on my trd pro bro" threads.
Keep the cool pictures coming wfo9

I was on a patch of grass surrounded by gravel and rocks, I get your point, and at no point was I in one of those areas stated by signs to stay off.
Again I think the UTVs do way more damage since i saw people spinning their wheels and rutting out the roads, which then makes it harder for the trucks to get up even the simple trails.

I was born and raised here. I've seen people do some really stupid shit in the mountains. I see none of that here.

That was literally a patch of non rocks about 8' long and 8' wide, where there was a pit someone setup for a campfire up towards imogene pass.
This wasn't driving off into protected tundra and spinning my wheels doing donuts.
Simmer down.

LOL... I appreciate the view, trust me we did no damage out there. We left nothing behind and did not tear up anything. I understand the concern though..... It just needs to be packaged with a little "common sense". I've been fighting trail closures (moto, trials, mountain bike....) locally for many years. When you give some of the nonsense claims an inch.... you are just falling into the nut balls camp and giving them more ammunition to continue to paint you into a corner. They will always win in the end if you agree to any of their ridiculous recreation based environmental dooms day assertions. It's a game they are experts at playing. The environment is amazingly resilient to responsible recreation. Development and irresponsible recreation is a different story.. I consider most rental operations... irresponsible recreation. Keep the bar high for building skills and or equipment and people will mostly be good stewards of the resources.
Anyway, back on topc.

Yea, I saw a ton of jeep rentals. But most of them were being very responsible. Again, side by sides and ATVs totally different story.
quick story from the trip:
My friends were camping off corkscrew gulch (close to Ironton) I was going back to town. We stopped and I was helping them find a spot when it started raining pretty hard and getting dark. I decided to head back before conditions degraded too much. The trail is pretty narrow and twisty in this area and it was dark and slippery. I was being careful and going a nice pace when some very bright lights came up behind me and got right on my bumper. I'm talking 2" off my bumper shining so bright that it was hard to see. I tapped my brakes to give them a hint... but I could just see the lights swerving back and fourth and could tell it was a side by side. It's raining pretty hard at this point and there is a bunch of runoff on the trail. The trail was way too narrow to pull over, so I sped up my pace a bit (I would say I was going 10-15mph) almost too fast for the conditions and I was having trouble seeing because my entire cab was lit up from the lights behind me. I was sliding around quite a bit... This went on for about a minute or two and then the dipshit tries to pass me. As he attempts this pass I swerve over to one side to give him as much room as possible. As he squeaks by he reaches up and shoots me the bird and hits a bump and goes up on two wheels (he's going very fast...30-40 (which is insane for these conditions). A child in the passenger seat looked like he was headed straight for the ground when the driver swerved and saved it.... I was in shock that someone would be so stupid, so I laid on my horn. Next thing I know two more ATVs pull up and the guy starts yelling at me telling me that I should have let them pass right away... that I almost caused an accident by honking my horn. I was pretty pissed at this point. so I gave him a good piece of my mind... we argued for about 5 minutes until I think he finally realized I was not going to back down and that he really had no leg to stand on. He finally just made some snarky comment about wishing me a "safe" trip home back to Texas as he finally sped off in his little toy I don't know where these people got the idea these trails are a high speed raceway. The dipshit who was arguing with me said something about you tourist going so dam slow think you own the place ...LOL. I told him my speed was 100% appropriate for the conditions and that if he was in such a hurry to get somewhere.. he should not be out there in the first place. WTF is wrong with these people.Side by sides are the jet skis of off-roading and seem to simply attract mostly throttle happy goons with 0 appreciation for anything besides themselves. I've had so many run ins when them locally that we have finally convinced the park rangers to crack down on them pretty hard core. They are always at the root of almost every injury accident, but there are still some responsible users... We have had many of them tear past groups of trucks spinning their tires throwing rocks on both vehicles and people. I know of a few private parks that have banned them permanently even though they still allow ATVs. For whatever reason, the side by sides just cause constant problems.

Exactly. These things are a plague in Moab and should be banned. I try to move over for anyone that is going faster than me, but if you're on a vehicle that can haul ass down a trail you're going to have to expect to get stuck behind slower people, and four wheeling is not driving on the interstate, there's often not room to pass. Good for you for giving him a piece of your mind.
