5th gen forever?

Reviewers online have said for years this vehicle is outdated and badly in need of a facelift, but I disagree completely. It’s nice to have an suv that isn’t an suv body on a car frame. I wouldn’t mind another 5mpg and maybe a 6th gear, though.

this 5th gen runner is a very heavy vehicle so as built , not gonna get better MPG.

a frame less vehicle will be lighter , but not good for off road use .. lighter MPG , will be better .

If I had the option I would buy the V8 runner.

My prediction, the 6th Gen. won't have a V6 in it.

I predict the 6th gen will either be a unibody, or it'll be at least a few years to wait for the new TNGA truck platform (at least 3-4 years out).

I don't see a unibody, Toyota is smarter than that. I hope it has a better transmission and gearing ratio for better fuel efficiency with a motor that isn't turbo'd or some sort of hybrid tech. In all honesty they just need to change the transmission to a more modern 6-8 speed, add a better electronics suite/infotainment stack and dash panel/guages (Apple/Andriod platform), and give it a slight interior and exterior facelift and it would sell well for another 6-8 years. I have no plans of getting a 6th Gen, we'd be more likely to trade up to a 200-Series/LX570, GX460, or a modified Sequoia.

I dont think they need much. Some mentioned a new tranny and I think that should been done already and not wait for another gen. A v4 turbo with a new tranny wouldn't be bad. Even though sales arnt dropping and people still want the 5th What really needs to be done is changing the inside. Its to outdated. Make the dash digital. All the other toyota models they change the inside and they look good but why not the 4runner

When it comes out, it'll probably be similar to the magnitude of changes seen on the 3rd gen. Tacoma. Slightly underwhelming with a focus on mpg possibly at the expense of gearing/throttle mapping... stuff like that. Some changes will be great; others likely will not.

Careful what you wish for. The new Tacoma got a 6 speed and it's an absolute pig. Traded mine in after 3500 miles, couldn't stand it. I liked the truck as a whole but the 3.5 and 6 speed is not at all what belongs in a truck. For those that lift their trucks and go with bigger tires, we can get away with a 33 an stock gearing. Throw another gear in the mix like the Tacoma and say goodbye to that. Personally I wouldn't sell my 5th gen unless the 6th has the same aggressive look and has a V8 option. I think the release of the 6th gen is going to push the value of our 5th gens through the roof.

I think it's all about tuning and matching the right powertrain to the weight and size of the vehicle. A 6 speed Tacoma is terrible yet a 6-8 speed Lexus is buttery smooth and wonderful. I just think Toyota did a terrible job with the ECU tuning in the Tacoma. My hope is that Toyota keeps 4Runner production in Japan and build it off the Prado platform rather than bringing production stateside with Toyota USA in San Antonio and Baja where it will be built alongside the Tacoma. Hopefully it will be more Prado than it will be Tacoma.

You could already buy that today - called a Highlander.
So no, I don't think Toyota will do that with the 4R.
