So I bought a 2012 limited and it came with everything but the roof rack cross bars. Seriously $45,512 sticker and I guess they are an option. Soee I bought a set of 5th crossbars from a member on here and tried to put them on. TOOOO short! The max they will open to is 39 3/4 and my rails are 40 1/2 apart on the inside. The 39 3/4 is with the thumb knob adjustment maxed. Are there two different widths for the 5th gen or am I missing something. Thanks Dunk

Really have no idea! He just said 5th Gen. Are you saying / thinking they are different!!
The Trail uses a different roof rack system than the SR5 or Limited, a quick image search shows the difference. The Trail does appear to be more narrow than the SR5/Limited.
Now I am confused. Just checked the members page and he does have a Trail BUT the roof bars look like the right ones, not those on Jayhawks trail. Qjake, did your 40 7/16 come off a Trail

I was surprised at first too and was looking for OEM crossbars, but after a while I got Thule crossbars because they wider and can accomodate more cargo, they provide better clearance over satellite antenna fin, they are easy to remove and they seem to be stronger than a factory ones.

These are measurements from the inner face of each side rail.
Front most position on the rail: ~40.25"
Rear most position on the rail: ~38.75"
If Toyota doesn't make them and uses a supplier it would be as simple as selecting a different roof rack and rail setup for the Trail. Simple as using different bumpers between the SR5/Limited and the Trail...
The Trails rack setup does look really nice... much tougher looking.

This seems to be your answer. I still can't see Toyota making two different sets of cross bars so I took another look at mine, there are torx screws on either end, try loosing them to see if they are adjustable.

The roof rail cross bars have a small turn nut on top that allow the length to change about an inch or so. Loosen the nut and slide the end all the way out and see if that helps.
OK, I measured between my rails. 40 1/2 everywhere front to rear. Also I took the turn knob you describe completely off and istaled the cross bars. Then there is very little inside the side pieces and the thumb knob is not even used. As far as the Qjake and the torx screws, I took them out and there is absolutely NO adjustment at all. Was going to try just one torx by just using one screw and there wold not be enough rack into the side sliders. These are definitely 3/4 inch to short.

Jake, yes I saw it. I checked the link and obviously see the that the Trail and 4runner have two different part numbers. In this thread there is a photo of a silver 4runner but the roof rack looks like it has some different style bars, not just narrower. Bottom line is they do make two different ones and OBVIOUSLY I have the wrong one. No big deal, I will figure something out. I will post the back in the for sale section but all I can definitely say is they do not fit a 2012 Limited. Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Dunk
