My personal opinion on color is for everything to be subtle. My old 05 Tacoma was the same way, I love it
I can do whatever colors though. I did this mostly for me, I haven't decided about offering it yet, installation takes some patience with the size and the bends of the body. Even I had a couple bubbles I'm gonna have to wait for the sun to work them out. Weather took a turn for the worse during my install too though
As far as extending the top lines all the way to the back, I mocked it up that way and it looked super busy at the back and out of place, I tried to stay true to the older styling and they never extended all the way back. I was also thinking about doing the graduating blocks style of retro for the 4runner but the fenders are super low in comparison to the body and they would have to be a bit above the fenders to look right.
I haven't dumped money in modding this runner and more than likely I wont. I want to pick up an 80s hilux/runner, because let's face it. I learned from my taco that you can dump thousands and thousand of dollars into a 2nd Gen taco or a 5th Gen T4R and still have it not go half the distance a older one would go with less money into it and I would be less pissed at myself for denting in a door on a $4k rig vs the $45k limited

I mocked up a set like that on the blueprints and it look super awkward, like way busy in the front and nothingness in the back, way out of balance

I would be interested. I love the retro colors, but my truck is silver. Not sure how that would look.
If Bronze, black and grey could be used, that would look killer on my truck.

Question: Did you apply them dry?
Back in the day we would use a mix of Joy dishwashing soap and water, spray it on the back of the decal and that would let you move the decal around to where you want and get it aligned. Once it was in place you would squegee it with a plastic applicator, let it dry for an hour or so and it was on with no bubbles or misalignment. Just curious if it's still done that way.

Yes I used water. Didn't use soapy water on this application but that's how I put them on.
I still got a few bubbles but the sun (when it decides to show up) will take care of those. Had to make a few tweaks to the design after I installed them to make them easier for the next guy. With the bends though, it's easier to cut between the strips so the lines can bend freely
If it is a non-air release vinyl, that is still the easiest way to install. But there is wrapping vinyl now that has small air release channels in the adhesive. Some will even slide around and not adhere until pressure is applied. The air release is nice as it has a lot of forgiveness in the vinyl and adhesive. You can stretch it significantly and still heat it back into shape. In the Oracal Wrap training class, I understand that they place a sheet of the wrapping vinyl over an open window. They heat the vinyl and push their fist into it until they are near their elbow, a good 14-18" in the window. Then using a heat gun, it will shrink back like new. In addition, you can apply, pull it back, reapply, pull back again and do this multiple times. It is pretty impressive stuff.
It's what we used to install my hood wrap.

Wow! I can't believe I missed this thread from last month!
This gave me an idea! '87 X-tra cab graphics on my '11 4 runner! 10 minutes on this computer and this is what I came up with:
Just skewed the graphics I did for my truck a few years ago onto a pic of my 4 runner when I had just bought it!
Not bad, but I think it needs some color to make it stand out just a slight bit more...

That's awesome! I can do them in different colors. I have added these to the store. I will probably do an introductory offer on them to $80 a set shipped. If anyone is interested send me a PM for a coupon code. I want to do a set of graduating ones. I may even pull off mine just to test fit them if I can't find someone up here in AK or Houston, TX where my brothers shop is.
