This proves how bad the new styling is.
According to the sales report just published by Toyota, the ONLY vehicle in their SUV line-up to show an increase in year-over-year sales is the 4Runner![]()
And how nobody wants body-on-frame construction anymore.
LOL, it's the ONLY vehicle in their SUV line-up that is new. What would you expect? Don't look too hard for meaning because there's just not much there. I'm sure the nubmers would be similar, if not higher for the recently redesigned Highlander too. Look that one up and let us know...
According to Wikipedia, the 2007 Highlander (last year of 1st Gen) sold 127,878, while the 2008 (first year of 2nd Gen) sold only 104,661.
The Highlander is down -21.7% year over year as of this last report, so it's not like they are rebounding in sales across the board.

last years numbers were down given it was last model year for 4th gen.
also, given the fact that there are about 1500 dealers in U.S, that amounts to about 2 4runner sales per month per dealer.
Bingo!Yeah, the 2009 4Runner sales were absolutely pathetic, probably the most terrible sales numbers for any year 4Runner since the beginning.
Bingo!
Yes, sales are up. They should be when the previous year was terrible, and the previous model was 6 years old. Next year's sales will be far more telling.
Last year was horrible... blah blah blah... this year isn't ANY better and Toyota has had nothing but bad press for the last few weeks. Almost everything else they are selling is DOWN across the board, with the exception of the Prius, Venza, and Tacoma. If the 5th Gen as destined to be such a failure, you would not be seeing these numbers when everything else is failing to match even last years numbers, either YoY or YTD.
You want to portray the 5th Gen as some horrible failure just because you don't like the design, not because the facts are supporting any argument you are making. Look at the pdf, read ALL the numbers... the 5th Gen is going to be popular, no qualifications needed.
If you really want to put sales numbers into perspective, Toyota has sold almost 6,000 2010 4Runners to date (up to the end of February 2010). Do you think they'll match the sales numbers of the 2003 4Runner (109,308 sold for the model year)? If they hope to match that number, they better get crackin'!!! LOL
What's up with the Venza sales? Does anyone know? The 2010 sales numbers are up almost 100% from 2009 total sales. This is a new vehicle, so what the hell is going on with those lopsided sales numbers?
And did anyone notice that Toyota sells hardly any Land Cruisers at all these days? The Rav4 still sells well and of course the Camry & Corolla still have big numbers, despite being down overall.
LOL, who said the 5th gen was going to be a horrible failure? I don't see anyone saying that....

Wow, Jed is all over this one! Numbers are numbers, take a breath people
The numbers show the 5th generation has attracted more people than the 4th of 09', to date so far. They have not offered any special offers on the 5th (as can be seen by all the complaining about it lately) and they have not done any advertising for it either (well I have not seen a single ad for it on the internet, magazine, or tv yet). The economy is still in the 'tank' right now as it was in 09' so no big difference there.
These sales have come from people who have wanted to update to a new SUV, came across the 4R in their research, and liked it more than others they compared it to, resulting in a purchase.
The 4th was 'dated' in 09', very little people argue that, the new generation was needed to keep it alive.
They took a lot out of the new 10's, (no V8, no torsen, etc), and the sales are still higher. Sure, in 5 or 6 years if they do not update the looks of the 5th it too will be dated and slow in sales, but for now it looks like Toyota did the right thing redesigning the 4R! Imagine if they left the Torsen and had a V8 option?!?! All of the members complaining would be updating adding even more numbers to the sales![]()
Look at the Sequoia numbers, wow, they have taken a hard hit! Personally I think it is because they did a bad redesign of that one. I liked the previous generation Sequoia over the new generation.
Numbers do not lie, all things equal the new 4R is more popular than the last one (in this give time period). As I said, I could understand if Toyota was offering 3k back, 0% fin., and bombarding the air & net with ads, but they are not.
Did they redesign the Venza? Sales of that have taken off too! )
In all fairness, in 2003, gas was cheap and the 4Runner didn't have a legitimate midsize CUV to compete against it under the Toyota umbrella. I see Highlanders all over the place. Back in 2003, every soccer mom that wanted a Toyota midsize SUV bought the 4Runner because the Highlander wasn't really big enough to compete.
