I bet a lot of people would like to wipe out one year of their life, but sadly that is not possible, not without a LOT of drugs! Just because you don't like something you can not pretend it does not exist, we are not children here, are we? Unfortunately 2009 does exist, so my points stand.

Personal attack? I don't see any personal attacks at all. Please don't try to turn a perfectly legitimate debate into something it is not.

Let me wrap this up by saying this: I'm sure Toyota is absolutely thrilled to be back (or should I say almost back) to the 4Runner sales levels they had in 2008, especially considering that one horrible year (2009) they had. Now imagine how they would feel if they could somehow sell 100,000+ 4Runners per year like they used to do when they introduced newly redesigned models. It would be fantastic if the 2010, 2011, and 2012 models all achieved that level of sales and that would lock up a 6th gen for sure. Lets see if Toyota decides to make due with under 50,000 sales or if sales pick up for 2011 like they did in the second year of the last two generations. That would be a good thing, but will it be enough? Time will tell.

Needs the V8 or Diesel To Grow

Previous 4Runner generation were alway better in performance and new features. The 5 generation does not have the performance of the V8/6 speed that is needed to make it compelling, and has a reduction in quite a few features from the 4 generation. So while it is nice, I do own one; it is not spectacular. In fact, it really is not exciting to many of the previous dedicated 4-Runner owners. People do not buy SUVs for gas milage, they buy then for excitement and capability where the 5 generation, while respectable, runs substantially short.

That may change by the mid-cycle refresh. Toyota has already dropped the 4-cylinder version. I can see them easily adding a V8 soon. That can only help sales.

'll say this, having lived in Japan during earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis (still a factor FYI) the 2011 sales are bad. Down 31% overall I believe . Add in high gas prices and ouch!

In any event I'll own a 4Runner TE Silver for the first time ever now that i'm moving back to the States in 2 days!! :bravo:

I didn't say it was a failure or that I hope it will be a failure. Most models get a big bump when they are replaced. The 4Runner is no different. And last year really was the nadir of car sales.

What matters is sales over the long term. We'll see how well it does next year. A large factor in how it does will be the price of gas. If gas stays low, it has a chance to do well. If gas goes up, then body-on-frame SUVs in general will get killed.

If Toyota don't get the shipping problem fixed because of all the problems they have been having over there (natural and man made) Sales probably won't be too great due to the shortage of the vehicle.

Interesting thread to read. I feel better educated by page 9, surprisingly. Lots of opinions and numbers to sift through.

One thing that hit me is that there most likely will be the body-on-frame option from Toyota for a long time, but which among the Land Cruiser, the 4Runner or the FJCruiser will give the most DNA is up in the air.

I'd bet on the LC over the others. They may not sell many here (lack of a diesel option doesn't help either) but they are still the first option in most countries. The Aussie LC70 series is made of pure awesome.
