5th Gen spare tire lock ??

I did a search for what, if anything, people are doing in the way of a lock on the spare for the 5th Gen. However any search using the word lock brings up everything under the sun, from locking rear ends to gas cap locks. After several pages without coming close to something dealing with spare tires I gave up.


I remember on the 4th Gen forum there were some solutions, from a simple bicycle type cable lock to some fairly elaborate mods. I'm looking for something simple just for discouragement purposes. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance for any help.

I spend a pretty fair amount of time in an area where my 4th Gen was exceptionally rare, and I've never even seen a 5th Gen. Fortunately it's very, very warm, so negative temperatures (ouch) like gecko and familia are getting hammered by is not a factor.

While for us the spare tire and wheel would have little to no interest, there it could be a tempting novelty. Again I'm just looking to discourage someone and buy time. So I'll just go with the obvious...a cable lock. Here's a link for what I found, and it's got a 12 mm braided steel cable which is the thickest I've seen so far:

If someone is going to bother to pry your rear gate open to access the spare tire lowering thingy, hack at the chain, or the retaining bar, you have much bigger problems to worry about.
 
Someone jacked my spare last week when I was at a conference. Left my 4R in a parking lot (well lit, bank lot) with other parked cars, but apparently made the mistake of leaving it backed up against a dark space on the edge of the lot.

I realized it was gone Monday when I was trying to figure out why my TPMS wouldn't quit acting up. I'm less angry over the loss now than I am intrigued how they got it off. They wound up the chain after removing the tire so I wouldn't notice any rattle, and it likewise doesn't appear cut. Seems like good, clean theft.

I have a 15 LTD where I had a non repairable puncture in a tire so I put on the spare and it's the same wheel as the others. Is this an anomaly?

Wow, and here I was wondering how one would get in there to undo it. I guess it must be do-able without opening the hatch.

there is no sensor in the spare, and IIRC the tpms on the 4r is only capable of monitoring 4 sensors anyway.
very curious how they managed to do this too...
 
Man that is not cool. Right now i am driving in my spare so one if my TE rims is in the carrier....

2016 TEP. I recently went through hell with a shop, trying to get new tires, and as part of the experience got to know my TPMS system pretty well.

I guess this is part of that "slight variations in each model" thing.

I can't find much literature on this, but I thought the LE has 5 TPMS sensors because the spare is a full OEM wheel/tire combo.

At least, I've been doing the recommended 5 wheel rotation and no service handler has brought this up.

Alternately, my TMPS dummy light is blowing up because my 4th sensor is missing (because I have the spare in use right now), but I've religiously checked my pressure and they're within 1/2 lb slp and it's blinking constantly.

I don't know how they did it, and I've wracked my brain to figure out other ways and I'm blank right now.

*It's certainly doable if you can reach the crank, but I assumed you couldn't reach it without the under-hatch access.
