5th Gen Upper Ball Joint Help

Hey, I searched and there is nothing I can find on replacing the upper balljoints on my 5th gen. Toyota says the whole control arm needs replaced. But they are clearly replaceable when I look at it. I was given this part #. 43310-39016 for replacements. I take it, I just remove the clips and press them out and in and go on my way. Is this correct?

Most folks just replace the entire unit with aftermarket a-arms. Why not look into a brand like JBA Offroad where the entire ball joint can be replaced or serviced without removing the UCA. Looks like they have a standard model for non-lifted 4Runners.

As for pressing in new oem ball joints you'll need to remove those UCAs to press out/in the joints. I'd double check with the orientation to make sure it doesn't need to put in a specific direction.

Couple of questions...why do you need replacement on the balljoint? The dealer wont cover this repair?
 
Its a 2010 with over 100k, I thought I was outside any warranty. I got new tires today and noticed the upper boots were greasy, So I thought I would take care of it before 2000mi + trip coming up

Looks like he has a 2010 4Runner. Unless he has a pretty big extended warranty I'd venture to say no.

OP, looks like others have covered this already. Yes, the OEM balljoint is not a serviceable item. Not sure what part number they gave you is, but I was under the impression that Toyota no longer sells the part separately. To the extent that the older Camburg control arms with OEM balljoints needed to be pressed out of the existing control arms if you wished to reuse them vs the Moogs. I'd make absolutely sure it was the right OEM part number you were given.

There is a Moog part number, I'll see if I can dig it up.

EDIT: Think it is Moog #MOOG-K500018; call them to verify. They also sell the complete arm with bearing already pushed in for a higher price. Personally if I were lifted and in need of a new UCA I'd go with an aftermarket replacement.

Oh yea i just noticed that. I just bought a 2014 sr5 and i was curious if this was a part that typically fails in these vehicles

The part # I got appears to be for the gen 3 or 4 I think. I was told they are the same balljoints by a local mechanic. Was told they use them all the time to replace them. I called Toyota and they wanted to sell me the whole arm for $400. My 4 runner is still 100% stock on suspension parts.

How did you know that you needed to replace the upper ball joints? What kind of symptoms is the truck experiencing?

The rubber boots are leaking grease, I don't think they are bad, just thought I would take care of it while I was there.

I have a set up UCAs that we're on my truck for about 400 miles. (All highway coming homee from dealer) I'd sell them to you cheap. Let me know.

I'd be interested in them, would be easier than joints alone.
