5th gens sales keep climbing

A few years back when Toyota revealed the 5th gen refresh the front end got a lot of hate and even a few members were predicting a dire future and plummeting sales but around here in Colorado they are as popular as ever and I actually prefer the aggressive nose.

I think for 2016 they will be over 100,000 sold;talk about a rebound for a bit of a niche vehicle and the refresh seemed to have boosted sales.

There's a ton of them here in California too. I think the 5th gen's bulky body is the best looking one yet. Maybe the criticism was from owners of previous gen vehicles who like their 4runner as much as I like my 5th gen. Humans are biased and when a 6th gen comes out I probably won't like the way it looks compared to my 4runner :becky:

The Xterra is it's really only direct competitor but the Grand Cherokee is there but those have become a bit soft and I rarely see them off road much anymore. Trails around here are dominated by Jeeps and Toyotas especially older ones.

They still make the Xterra? I thought they discontinued it?

The only BOF Jeep is the Wrangler and that's somewhat of a competitor I suppose?

I gave an obligatory look at the cherokee before getting the 4runner but the sliding rear window was a big plus on the 4runner for my needs. If the 4runner got better mileage I'd make everyone I know buy one.

It has always been Unibody, the only BOF Vehicle Jeep ever made was the Wrangler. They've been making CUVs since before the term existed.

Pretty sure the durango is built on the same platform as the grand cherokees now, I looked them up awhile ago for who knows what reason. I test drove the new Nissan Armada the other day, aside from a gx460, Land Cruiser or G-Wagon, I'm pretty sure it's one of the only other bof suv's. I will say that aside from some concerns about interior quality, the new Armada was a pretty sweet driver. Wheelbase, angles, and overall size make it inappropriate for tighter trails.. thing is a whale.. but still nice. Maybe I'm just a sucker for big v8's :shocked:

I was originally looking at picking up a keep srt8 as I knew the new grand Cherokee weren't all that trail capable. As for wranglers I didn't want that as I needed something that could act as a family vehicle And I wasn't interested in a wrangler for that function.

I was on Nantucket one weekend and saw a Tacoma TRD PRO and was like what the heck is that! It looks really well put together. Started googling about them and saw the 4Runner pro and was like wow that's a really nice vehicle. When I started reading about them more I was sold and bought one a week later. Trail premium with KDSS.

I was looking at Rubicons 2 years before I jumped into my TEP (last month). Even secured -7% below invoice on special order TWICE but could not pull the trigger. For some reason I had not looked at anything else until I looked up the 4-Runner and within a month I had one on order with deposit. If you want a truly capable vehicle (SUV'ish type) for around 40k then these two are really the only players IMHO.

Add me for another '16 buyer. I've owned 2 Wrangler Rubicons, also had an LC80.

I wanted something more versatile than the wrangler, all the used Toyotas either have a crap ton of miles or are priced just as much as new (or both). As others mentioned, no more xterra (dad had one, I really like it), I have no need for a pick-up truck, the G-wagon is awesome, but has too much luxury crap to go wrong and only early (2002s) are available for pricing of a new 4Runner. Briefly thought of a GC, but they are more expensive and have no lockers or solid rear axle or BOF, etc.

The 4runner (I like to think of it as mini-land cruiser or modern day LC80) is a no-brainer.

^^^^Still cannot agree with this more. I will keep saying it until the day they stop making them.... for the price range 4Runners are in, you cannot, and will not, find a more all-around, on & off-road capable vehicle, with some luxury thrown in there as well. Period. At least one that is going to start up every single day and give you very few (if any) major issues. This time around, I just felt like having the TEP; but there’s a decent chance I’ll go back to a Limited after this one. I’m always looking, and have been tempted... but I keep buying a 4Runner... for good reason.
