5vzfe timing belt question.

After rebuilding the 5vzfe using the same timing belt ( replaced 1k ago) I'm having trouble getting the cam timing aligned since the lines on the belt are worn off. How many teeth are between the marks on the belt. Also is the timing crank pully supposed to be able to rotate 10 degrees?

If you are reusing your belt you are supposed to mark it's position before you take it off. If you didn't, I'm really not sure how to reposition aside from counting teeth on the belt or getting a new belt. Hopefully someone else is in the middle of a timing belt job and can count the teeth for you.

As far as the crankshaft sprocket rotating 10 degrees, I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about. If the crankshaft sprocket is rotating without rotating the actual crankshaft, make sure the woodruff key is still in place. Good luck figuring this out!

Here's the factory service manual (FSM): Toyota Tacoma/ 4Runner/ Tundra/ FJ Cruiser Factory Service Manual Page
The 5vzfe starts on page 355

Just get a new belt. Save yourself some heart ache and get a new one. If you really want to keep your other one, buy a new belt and use it to measure and mark your old one correctly and return it. But even then you have to be 100% sure the marks are right. If you are off even by one tooth you might have aton of troble figuring out what the problem is.

The timing belt pulley is not suppose to move. everything is suppose to be tight. I had the same thing happen to my pulley and turns out it was chewed up from the woodroof key some how. Probably from where I hydro locked my first engine. I would take it off and inspect it. Make sure and use a flat head screw driver and really inspect it. Mine was caked full of metal and rust and looked like everything was ok until I touched it with the screw driver and all the debris fell out..

The right cam and left cam lines are oriented on a "valley" on the belt. Counting the ridges between those, valleys, I count 50 of them.

Get a new belt. The amount of work to get back in there to swap it out is not worth it, when you can get a belt at Autozone for $40 or so.

Just did mine last night. I learned a lot (mostly that I don't want to do it again).
