5w-20 TSB Question? Link of Manuals/TSB

Does anyone use 5w-20 vs 5w 30 or even a differnet weight up here in the North east area?

I read a Toyota TSB which states that they recommends 5w-20 for certain engines listed but then it says to use oil labeled on fill cap...? I'm just trying to find out 5w-20 would be a better choice for my 2007 T4R V8 Or not.

I search for 5w-20 but no results...

Here is the TSB

No, I would stick with what the manual says and use 5w30. It is easy to find and cannot think of what benefit would be derived from the change to 5w20

It's for gas millage. Issue is that clearances are set to run a certain oil, and auto manufacturers are wanting 0-20 and 5-20 because it helps squeeze the last mpg out. I am new to the 4runner scean, but from lots of experiance kn other cars I would stick with the 5 30. In subarus the new ones they want people to run 5 or 0-20, the turbo Subarus are failing like crazy, and there na ones burn oil to the amount of 1-2 qts per 1000 miles. (Not exactly a oil issue more of the piston rings) but most dealers don't even listen to Sunaru after doing the short block replacment and run 5 30. Turbo ones everyone runs 540 even.

It's up to you, oil debates are very heated arguments from my experiance. Personally I'm sticking with 5 30.

According to Toyota,
"This oil is superior in terms of fuel economy, engine protection, and cold
starting performance."

What more could you want?

0W20 is in the same viscosity range at operating temperature as 5W20, it's just thinner at startup. There's a recent thread about it.

what weight do you use on your 2007 V8?

I just want to have the best performance and protection possible. The only reason I was asking was because of that TSB I ran across and it about time for a oil change. I only have 31000 miles on my 2007 V8 and want this truck to last a song as possible because I'm not very happy with the 5th gen 4runner yet. The lack of a V8 power plant and the limited amount of options. Like most manufacturers SUVs are becoming less and less capable offroad from the factory. I wish they would offer a diesel engine.

I was just curious to find out if any other people with the V8 engines use 5w-20 or stuck with 5w-30.

BTW, for all the synthetic oil users what oil filter do you use? I know most use OEM ones but think since synthetic oil is being used a better quality filter might be better to use. I already change my oil filter twice before changing the oil again.

I drive my work truck 95% of the time and it's a diesel. I'm actually getting a new work truck that is coming in from utility body manufacturer next week so I'm pumped to get the new 2015 Ford 6.7L PowerStroke 440 HP/860 TQ stock. We have 10 of them in our fleet and they can really hold up with the beatings they get from the technicians
I really love diesels now after driving them over the the past 10 years (and i also already bought a tuner for my new work truck can almost double the HP AND Torque of I choose to run that specific tune. :becky:, ,I did have them make me special tunes because of the constant load I'll be carrying so I won't damage anything). I like to do things right, that's the reason I'm asking about the oil weight and not brand or type.

I've always used synthetic oil after break in and had the transfer case and both differentials flushed and filled with my specific 100% synthetic gear lube as well. I was considering adding a bypass oil filter but don't think it's as necessary as the one I'm putting on my F350 along with water separator and coolant filtering system.

On my diesels I use 5w-40 winter and 15w-40 in summer (if I can get 15w-40 in synthetic because it's not always easy to get 16qts each oil change), 5w-40 synthetic one the ot
Other hand is really easy to come by. They must think I'm crazy, or juat OCD when I buy 12 case of gallon jugs of synthetic oil each time (usually have to order it ahead of time). It's also probably the only time I buy Valvoline oil too.

You want the best than use Amsoil oil and filters. Lots of great oils out there and all will do a fine job provided regular change intervals. I have been using Amsoil for years and my last vehicle was a '94 Ranger 4.0 that I sold with 250k on it. Always ran great and never a problem. Ran Amsoil since day 1 with 10k or 1 year oil change intervals. At 230k it finally started to use a little oil so I would add about 1 qt in 10k miles. Not bad for a Ford.

I haven't changed it myself yet, so whatever the dealer put in there. 5W20 is likely if they are trying to only stock one kind of bulk oil, but maybe they still have 5w30, too? The service advisors are not exactly knowledgable, so there's no point in asking. Probably whatever is cheapest because they only charge $25, even though this engine takes 6.5 quarts.

I'm planning on trying 0w20 because it should decrease wear when then engine is cold, and maybe improve fuel economy slightly (the biggest gain would be in cold weather and short trips. At operating temperature it's in the same range as 5W20).

I could do a used oil analysis to get an idea of what's in there now, but for $25 I don't think it's worth it. I do plan to save a sample in case I decide down the road that I want a baseline UOA, since I plan to do a UOA on the 0w20 around 5,000 miles to make sure everything is OK.

I plan to add a block heater when I change the timing belt, maybe this fall. I don't usually have a place to plug it in, but if I move somewhere with more convenient parking I plan to plug it in for a few hours before every time I drive, at least in cold weather, so that might somewhat negate the need for 0w20.

I looked into filters a bit, and it looks like the Toyota filter 90915-YZZD3 is good quality and easy to obtain. A lot of people like the Japanese 90915-20004 filter, but they are hard to obtain, expensive, and I saw no evidence that they are any better than a regular filter.
This thread shows that Amsoil's filter is more efficient than Toyota's, but it's a test by Amsoil so it would be good to find an independent test. Also, I don't know how they define efficiency. It might not be a useful measure of performance. SHO Denso OEM Oil Filter vs Toyota Denso OEM Oil Filter
This thread shows that the Toyota filter is larger and has more surface area than the competition.

Here's a good report on the Amsoil filter. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=66157&Number=846034#Post846034
And a discussion of what the Amsoil test results mean. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1379904

I can't find a place to buy the Amsoil filter except from them directly for $15, so I think I'll get the YZZD3 from the dealer when I get the crush washers I need for the gear oil and engine oil. It should be about $5, but if not Amazon has them for around $7.

I use Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic oil and a Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter on my 03 V8.

I started using this in my 4Runner when I bought it used (I'm the second owner). I change oil/filter once a year (I don't put that many miles on my 4Runner)

No cold weather starting issues at all using the 5W30 synthetic oil. Comes up to temperature relatively quickly. I also have a block heater for those super cold days.

Was the block heater a factory option or did you add a aftermarket unit? If you did add a aftermarket what is the brand and model? I love my block heaters on my commercial trucks. Waiting to warm 16 qts of coil when 0 degrees could take a while with out one. Funny thing is that all of the Dies trucks have the heaters built into them, but when you order the option they just I stall the special cord to connect the heater to a 115vac plug! I wish Toyota had the same practice! Ive been running the same oil as you but if 5w-20 will protect my engine better and reduce drag because lower viscosity I'm a for it.

My 4Runner originally came from Southern Ontario and had no block heater.

When it came up to me in Northern Ontario via my local Toyota dealership, I had them install a Toyota block heater as a part of the purchase deal.

I have an 05 v8 and my engine says 10w30 on the filler cap. I live in the NE. Should I switch to 5w30? I have always used mobil 1 and I am the original owner.

It's extremely easy to add a block heater to the aluminum V6. It's the same part for most of their aluminum engines, and it just slides into a cast hole in the block.

Unfortunately the V8 block heater installs in place of one of the freeze plugs, and it involves draining coolant from the block, and it's difficult to access. In Canada they are common, so they have a lot of experience installing them. US dealers might not know about them. I don't know why block heaters are not more common in northern parts of the US? Sure, they are not necessary for the engine to start, but they improve efficiency, and having heat to warm up the interior and defrost the windows almost right away is a major benefit.
