650# or 700# Coils for ARB Bumper

Update:

Went with Icon 700# springs on the 4th setting and could not be happier. Truck is unbelievably controlled with the extra 160# ARB up front.

Hoping to keep lift at 2"ish with 6112s going from stock 600# coils to either 650# or 700#.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I have a Demello with 700# and it sits a bit higher in the front but that's also cause of my blown springs.. either will work for your needs

The ARB is also heavier than my Demello flat top so 700# probably better

Given the same coil lengths, the 700# coils wouldn't need to be preloaded as far as the 650# making the "preloaded spring rate" closer to one another.

If your 6112's c-clip range is the same as my Icon's thread range, you won't have a problem achieving less than 2" of lift with a 700# 14" coil.

I think either will do you fine, maybe try the 650# if you are not going to get a winch?

My goal would be to not add any preload.

Yeah, if you like blue, I have the King 3" x 14" 700# on my Icons. Normal aftermarket springs are only 12" tall.

This picture is as low as the front would get, the collar was threaded all the way up the shock. Stock size tires and no lift in the back.

I have ICON CO's with 700# springs with almost no preload on them. I only have about 2 threads showing on the drivers side and about 1 (maybe .5) on the passenger side. The 700# icons are 14" long compared to 650# icon springs which are 13"(?).

The ARB bumper weighs about ~140lbs.
Winch ~80lbs

It rides amazing, as is, with the weight up front and it providing right around 2" lift. Maybe less. If anything I would like to bump up the preload a HAIR to make it a little more firm. It wouldn't take much I'm guessing.

That being said I installed the 700# CO's a few weeks before installing the bumper/winch (same settings) and I thought that was the perfect balance of super plush and supportiveness of the front end. It was great. I mean, darn near perfect.

Anyways that's my experience with ICON, DIGRESSIVELY VALVED SUSPENSION. Some other brands (FOX, KING) may be a whole different story (PROGRESSIVELY valved) and may required different spring rates

700# springs almost no preload, rode GREAT. Edit: 2" Metaltech rear springs

Probably can't see how little preload on drivers side...

With bumper/winch, same exact settings as before

Highly recommend the 700# springs if you are camping/touring off-road. You need the ability to handle that weight safety.

Reviving this thread.

The bumper is on. While the front only dropped about 3/8", the nose dive is pretty bad. When braking hard, the rear ABS engages.

With that being said I was originally planning on increasing the preload to the highest setting on the 600# 6112s. I am now leaning towards going with the 700# Springs to help with the nose dive.

Can anyone comment on nose dive with stiffer Springs and a front bumper?

ARB bumper weights 160# total. Stock bumper is 18# so there is a net gain of over 140# way out front.

Thanks,
Will

The nosedive I have now is definitely more than stock, but I expected that with a steel cabled 12.5k winch and the ARB bumper. I don't believe it's much worse than most other lifted and armored 4Runners I've been in though. In fact I felt like a 5th gen with a hidden winch mount and winch nosedived about equally with it's bilsteins set at the highest setting when I rode/drove in it a few times.

Never had any issues with abs in the rear or anything though, maybe you need a zero-point calibration?

For your reference: 06 V8, icons w/ about 1" of threads showing on top, 700# springs, arb bumper, superwinch talon 12.5.

Checked out your build...sweet setup!

Thanks for the further advixe, I went ahead and ordered the 700# coils.

On another note how did you get PIAA fogs in the ARB? Which ones did you use?

Thanks, I need to update that...

I went with 510 Ion Fogs (PIAA | 510 Ion Yellow Fog Halogen Lamp Kit #05161). Found a set on craigslist.

I had to significantly enlarge the ARB fog light holes to fit the PIAA's with the guards. Then I welded little tabs on the inside of the bumper for the lights to mount too (which was a bit of the pain due to the angles, hard to get the welder we have in there). I then put a little screw through the plastic ARB fog light surround that holds the light from being pushed/tilted backwards into the bumper. It's a bit janky, but going a year+ at this point and they've held up alright. I'm not sure I'd do it again (honestly I'd probably buy a different front bumper designed to take the PIAA's, but this one was a steal of a deal when I found it), I use the light forces on the bumper for real lighting in inclement night weather, but the PIAA's look cool in my opinion so I'm alright with it all.

Keep us posted on the nosedive after the new coils go in. It's a bit of a subjective thing, so would be awesome to see a perspective that got to deal with both options while keeping everything else the same.

Sweet, thanks!

It's subjective until the rear ABS goes off. Ever have that with your setup?

Agreed.

Definitely not. That's why I'm wondering if you might need a zero-point calibration. The rear abs may not be kicking in so much because the front is diving (lifting the rear in theory), but more because you lifted the rear 2 inches. Can't say for sure though, I just know a zero-point cal solved my over active vsc/abs issues after lift.

Glad to hear. Thanks!

I did to a ZPC once the truck was lifted and it too helped with the overactive VSC intervention.

It's definitely not overactive. You can hear the rear tires lock up slightly so I know it's legit.

When I purchased my front ICON coilovers I do not remember being a purchasing option to choose 650 or 700 lb coils.

Can't speak to how others have done it, but I got mine via group buy. I ordered a normal stage 2 kit then contacted the vendor and had the front coils swapped for 700# coils. They were shipped as a complete coilover. I believe most vendors on here and other related forums will do the same.

It is odd that it's not an obvious option/selection on most websites.

I justed installed bilstein 6112s with king 700lb springs because of the v8 weight, no bumper and the truck rides great!!! As others mentioned you don't have to preload so much. Tried the 6112 with stock 600lb springs and full clip would only get me 2.5" lift. Now I'm at 3.5" lift and a great ride.
