7 Months and 20k miles of Ownership

Hi All,

Small update here. I recently returned from visiting the wife and kids and I'm just a few miles short of 20,000 miles after having picked up my truck with 7 miles the day after I got back from Afghanistan on May 19th.

All is well with the truck. I've lifted it, got my bigger tires on, installed my comms and taken it all over the United States.

Here are my biggest gripes though:

- Navigation Sucks
- That damned seatbelt chime
- I want to murder the guy that designed the Cruise Control
- Who the hell didn't think of the antman beer holder mod from the factory?

That's pretty much it.

This thread pretty much has no real value other than to pad my post count. Enjoy your night.

What's your gripe w/the cruise control? Just curious...

Personally, I don't really like the small little handle behind the wheel. I'd prefer it to be an actual button(s) on the steering wheel.

Spend $20 on an eBay tech stream cable to fix the sea belt chime.

It cannot deal with even slight inclines, and is even worse when you add heavy tires.

The cruise control sucks big time, I turn mine off every time I come up to a big hill or incline. Any cruise control that drops 2 or 3 gears at freeway speed is re****ed.,

I'm going to ask them to turn it off when I get oil changed...maybe in the morning. We'll see.

Yup. No different in my dad's 2011 Limited.

This is my first automatic I've owned as I always had sticks previously, but thought this cruise control issue was characteristic of automatics. I don't think it's common just to our 4 runners as I've noticed it on many autos I've driven over the years.
EDIT: I haven't tried the manumatic feature with the cruise engaged I wonder how that would work?

I dissagre my wife has a Lexus is250 and her cruise control is a smooth as a babies butt, even my GMC Sierra had a better cruise control than my runner...I still love it though

I never drove a Lexus, so point taken. Furthermore tho, the first time I had the cruise engaged and hit a long hill it did shift down, but seemingly it needed to as the RPMs dropped. On my tacoma with a manual I usually had to shift down manually or if the RPMs dropped to much it would default to off to prevent engine lug.

The cruise control issue has been around for quite some time and has not limited to the 4Runner. The CC has operated in a similar manner on every Toyota truck/SUV I've owned. This includes a '91 and '95 Previa, 3rd gen T4R, and the current 5th gen. I'm only guessing that, since Toyota has not bothered to address it over at least a 22 year period, they are likely not going to. Like many others, I have adapted by turning the CC off while going up inclines, as I find I can avoid the constant speed surges better using my foot.

Yeah, the seatbelt chime sucks. But, I still haven't bought my dummy buckles to go in them so it is my fault I guess. I live in the suburbs right next to a large sheriffs station so I always have my belt on, but when I am out in the desert it can be a pain. I have to laugh though every time my dad rides with me because it makes him so angry. He goes off on a tirade every time the chime goes off. hahaha

I used to have a hard time with the cruise control, but I know how to baby it into submission now. On undulating roads, I just tap the speed down a tiny little bit at a time until it stops acting up. Usually around 68mph +/- . I have found that if you are going too fast or too slow, it can be a nightmare.

Maybe it's just the trucks and SUV's that have this problem as I have driven 3 sedans and the CC on those vehicles work fine. Like desertred said above and others have said, I switch mine off and use my foor when going up any inclines.
