84 4Runner Back Door Light

Hey guys, I was driving tonight and on the way to my destination my Back Door light started to slowly come on. It was just fading on. I don't know why it is doing this. Sometimes when I put it in neutral or in reverse, it goes off for a second. Can anyone help me with this please? Thanks, Semper Fi.

Are you talking about the warning light in the dash that your back door (tailgate) is unlocked ?

If so, it works off a switch in the tailgate. There is no reason why it should act the way you describe, it's either OFF or ON.

...Unless the circuit's shorting out in route to the dash. That could be the case, rare, but possible. If so... It would be a b!tch, but you could trace the wire from the switch, to the dash, and find it using a service or heaven forbid a haynes or chiltons to get the wiring diagrams.
