84' Transfer case problems.

I recently purchased a 84 4runner, the only thing that was supposed to be wrong with it was the clutch, a broken driveshaft and the ignition cylinder was stripped.

I changed out the key cylinder and cranked it up and the clutch feels fine.
You can put the transmission in 1st and 2nd and when you release the clutch nothing happens, if you put it in reverse it sounds like the transmission is making a clanking noise without releasing the clutch and doesn't change if you release the clutch, the transmission wont go into 3rd 4th or 5th. If you shift the transfer-case into 4-hi it makes a grinding sound.

Any ideas on what's wrong with the t case?

All that happens when you are trying to shift the trans into any gear, and your asking what's wrong with the t-case ???
Look into the trans problems first.

i agree i dont think the t case is the issue if your t case is in 2wd and you still cant get any gears to move the truck then i would start with the clutch system.
master cylinder slave cylinder clutch set. when all these are new and for sure in working order then your left with a bad transmission and thats the easy part. used g52 and w56 trannys are a dime a dozen i have 3 on craigslist for 50 each they are so common.
