85 issues

i am hoping you guys could give me some opinions. before i rebuildt my 22re (with the much needed help of a friend) i had an issue that happened quiet a bit. not all the time but alot of it. at take off, some times it stutters real bad and dosent want to go. i usally push in the clutch and rev it up and try again. if i just keep the peddle down itll eventully get the rpms up and once they pick up it runs fine. when i rebuildt the truck i did a complete rebuild but reinstalled all the old parts as far as tps throotle body etc. i redid the valves and shaved the head etc. during the break in period this problem went away so i assumed it was from me cleaning most the gunk out of the intake parts. then i noticed the rpms would drop and surge when i came to a stop. it only happened when the brake was applied. i did some research and read that if your idle is set to high it will do this. i dropped the idle a bit and that issue was resolved. how ever the stutter at take off came back. its allmost like mabey i put the idle to low and now it loads up... mabey if i found the perfect idle position it would stop??? i dont have the tach cluster so im not sure where the idle is. the check engine light dont come on so im assuming having a tech plug it into the comp wouldnt give me any info. opnions welcomed. thanks.:redbrick:

To start, you have an OBD1 system. There is no computer to plug into it. Are you getting a check engine light? If so, look at the FSM in the sticky on the top of the forum. It will tell you how to check your CEL codes.

The sputtering can be a number of things. It can be anything from your coolant temp sensor, tps, idle air control valve, afm, boogered injectors and ecu issues. Dig into the EFI section of the FSM and start troubleshooting ALL of your sensors. Odds are, it is a sensor issue and you need to find the bad sensor(s).

When you unplug each sensor, look at the plugs for each and make sure that they are clean and in good shape. A bad connector can cause all of this too. Also, do they snap in place firmly? They can vibrate loose if the locking clip doesn't work.

lol. i got 85 issues and horse power aint one....o wait. nevermind. as far as engine light...none comes on. it sucks that there seems to be no easy way to pinpoint my problem. just start checken sencers 1 by 1? would it be a bad idea to start with replacen the o2? im pretty sure i need new exaust and my airbox has a hole rusted through the bottom if that makes a difference......:shrug::shrug::shrug:

Welcome to my world :).

Just buy the parts with the warranty and soon you'll have a 30 year old 4runner with a bumper to bumper warranty!

On the flip side, you'll know every inch of your 4runner like the back of your hand.

ill make sure to take pics this time! i found my body. i found an 87 4runner with 0 rust and a small dent in the rear corner panel. my Buddie bought it for the motor and tranny so i get the rest for 200 bucks! any one have any pointers on making the swap onto my frame any easier? thanks.

man i scored! (i think anyway). the 4 runner is straight as hell. getting it trailerd to our ranch tommarow. my favorite part is the fact that the rear springs look new. it sits level as hell. that will be nice untill i decide to upgrade the suspionsion. while i have my old body off im going to clean and paint the frame and axles. its has the old red dash that i hate. plus its cracked so ill have to use my brown one. it also has the cluster with the tach.... looking foward to this! even has all the inside trim!:flipoff:

spent most of today cleanen the new 4runner out. gona start doing the hard stuff in the am. ill post pics tonight. ill do some research, but is the master and brake booster any better out of the 87? im also not sure which of the 2 ecu's i should use. opinions?
