87 automatic not so automatic HELP

I recently bought a mint 87 one owner 4runner. It is literally like new, not a crease in the seat, not a fade in the dash...nothing. Even all the gauges and knobs look new. Problem is, it had a blown head gasket, so I we put a new head (and other things since we were I there anyway) on.

Fired it up today, backed it down the driveway.....other than some valve noise, it runs fine, but put into drive and it bogs down like its in 3rd......shift it to first and she drives fine...

Any ideas? Transmission? Something simple? Kill it with fire?

Please chime in if you may know something.

Does it work in all gears if you shift it manually?

your 1st gear shift solenoid is either bad or connection isn't good, try letting it warm up and if it starts to shift fine it is a failing solenoid. Pretty common with this generation of auto's

It shift manually just fine, all the gears work. Any chance it's the kick down.

How hard are the shift soliniids.

Any chance you know the best place to get solenoids that don't break the bank?

Swapping the TPS from a running driving 4runner did not work, so the solenoids showed up today. We will give it a shot this weekend.

Would anyone recommend a synthetic Tranny fluid in this or no? What should I run, is anything better than anything else?

UPDATE

Swapped the 3 solenoids today. Two matched and 1 was different. The lockout one I believe is the different one.

Dropped pan, replaced solenoids, put in new filter, put pan back on....

NOW I only have 1st gear. No mater the position of the shifter, the tranny stays in first. The solenoids I put is were smaller the the OEM ones. Also, I'm not sure if the two matching ones go in a specific location.

Please throw out any ideas.

All gears worked fine pre solenoid replacement when shifted manually. Post replacement, vehicle never leaves 1st gear.

I did email them back to confirm the parts I got were for my truck. They said the solenoids fit all the A340E transmissions... Jeep and Toyota.

The parts they sent me were smaller than what I took off, but mounted fine.

Worth mentioning, I took off three part numbers. But the ones they sent me, the lock up solenoid was the only different one. The other two were identica.

They just said that was a "new design"

Any thought?

I felt the same way, so I cross referenced the part numbers, and I am finding that the aftermarket kits all seem to use the part in both locations.

One more shot in the dark, then, are you looking at the A340E or the A340F? Yours should be the F, and there may a difference.

Good luck. I know how frustrating it is to be completely lost on a repair. The auto trans section of the FSM has a troubleshooting guide, have you looked at that yet?
