On the fence on the 88 I just bought. The buyer will take it back , if the engine turns out to be a catastrophic issue ( knocking, loss of power) . I need a 2nd 4x4 now for the winter season. The truck needs alot of interior work, body wise it is straight and rust free, the tranny seems like it's on the money. Back window is stuck down and the power windows don't work. I'm into it for $1000 already . just wondering if it's going to take another $2K to get it up nd running or should I just look for something else ???

Depends on how much you want it. Obviously engine issues can get pricey depending on the engine but interior can be fixed up for cheap. I'd replace the power window doors with manual ones ie. new doors at a junk yard. As for the back window see if it just a sensor that isn't letting it roll up (such as the window lock switch, the tail gate is closed fully, and the cap is bolted on, there are plenty of articles discussing fixing the back.) or just swap out the motor for a 5.0
The seller. The seller will take it back.. Really. Wow. Lucky.
It sounds like the engine is in a bad shape. Knocking is destroying/destroyed your engine EVERY cycle.
Loss of power is a pretty clear indicator something is wrong. You have to utlimatly decide what you value.
I will say this. You are in a far better situation than many others. Usually a sale is a sale is a sale.. done, final. It is the buyers duty to check it out. If you have any reservations about it.. take it back.

I prefer remanning a bad engine to rebuilding. You really want to rebore and re'spec everything.
It is kinda an opinion. But if you are having serious engine knocking, then you are doing physical damage to pistons. Seals. Rings. The physical cylinder itself. You really want to get in there at a shop and get everything back, if possible, to factory quality. Knocking is the product of violent pre-detonation in your engine. That is a TON of explosive kenetic energy ripping into every engine component. If it really is knocking, and knocking seriously... I wouldn't trust a single component in that engine.
A rebuild kit usually ignores a lot of those issues. It may or may not have new pistons. Get what I am saying? I think your engine needs a complete breakdown and to go through a remanufactoring process. That is costly and you could as easily simply buy an already remaned 22r(e) from various companies. I like Jasper engines. They come with a nice warranty.
But.. again, they cost 1 to 2 grand and you have to do the install work yourself, or pay someone; which is another chunk of change.
