890 vs 891

What's up, guys. I'm looking to replace my LC Coils as I'm tired of the rake and general flexiness of them for my dd. my question is really one of load bearing capabilities for the 890s and one of flex capabilities for the 891s. Are the 891s completely useless crawling? I do still hit some trails periodically. And are the 890s going to sag badly when I tow my track car (1900#)?

My 891's seem to flex pretty good. Will be hitting a trail in a couple weeks and can give a better idea. They also ride great.

Well, where do you want an optimum ride? When you're tooling around town, when you're wheeling, or when you're towing?

If you don't have a lot of weight in back on a regular basis, you'll hate the 891s. I recommend the 890s, and then if they're not up to towing your track car invest in a set of airbags.

Or... get this... a tow rig. Novel concept, I know. :)

I would love a tow rig but I don't want the gas mileage of a tundra or Land Crusier so I'll have to make the 4Runner do for now. I went with the 891s, I'm usually carrying tools and whatnot around so it won't be too big of a deal to me I don't believe...Gotta love having to make a vehicle multi-purpose.

See my response to a similar post here.

I like my 891/Bilstein setup that I have. It works well on road, off road and towing.

An it flexes well.

I think my dad's 05 Tundra gets better mileage than my Runner. But I agree, something that can do everything is nice.

I have 891s and with a 300lb jet ski on a hitch hauler it sits about level with the front (2" lift in front). And it seems to flex well as the others have said (and I'm only running stock shocks...). It's kinda rough with stock shocks, but I don't really have anything to compare it to except saggy stock coils...

So pardon my noobishness, but what would be an acceptable load for 5125/890s?
I am about to install them with 5100/TRD front on 1st setting. Hoping my usual gear
(~200lbs) or occasional fill-to-the-gills trips will solve rake and won't overwhelm them?

I just did a 7770 mile trip of 27 days on the road hauling approx 800 pounds in the back the whole time with zero problems with 891s.
Ride was fine and it didn't even sag that much.

I have no idea why so many people say they ride harsh unloaded, mine sure doesn't. In fact it rides great unloaded AND loaded with up to 800# in the back.

From Spacers to Shocks/Coils

I removed the front 1.5" spacer and 3" rear spacer with factory coils. I added Bilstein 5100 shocks front and rear as well as OME 891 coils to the rear. Factory springs up front. HUGE difference and added height. The truck rides like a dream. I keep about 200-300lbs of gear in the back.

Agreed. I don't notice any difference in the ride quality vs the stock springs. I gotta think that half of the folks that keep saying 891s are rough are just repeating what they read on the internet.

Come ride in my leaf sprung F350 or F450. That will show you what rough feels like.

Here's a profile of mine with 890's in the back. I don't haul much and never tow, but it feels perfect to me for trail driving and not too rough at all on the road.

Not to revive a year-long dead thread, but...

I'm currently in this debate with myself, trying to figure out which set of springs to get. On any given day, I have a 12" sub/box combo, a tool kit, and a tote with a bunch of miscellaneous sh!t, and occasionally I'll load it up more but that's not too often.

I do have Airlift bags in the back, which, if I had to, I could keep them in for when I load up, but with the weight that I have in the back at all time, is that gonna be too much for the 890s?

I had 891s on my 3rd gen and as people have stated, I loved the ride with or without weight. When it was loaded with 200#, it definitely road softer, but I liked it w/ or w/o weight

I have been seriously considering going with 891s for a while now. They have the lowest spring rate of all the EMU springs. I sometimes think they are too "bouncy" but I don't have any real load. Maybe that's the problem. My son was in the back seat and he said the same thing. I have bilstein tundra 5100s all around and tundra coils up front, but the bounciness seems to come from the rear. Maybe that's how a lifted truck feels but I just don't remember either of my trucks feeling like this when they were stock. Just my .02 cents.

Don't overthink it. If you have airbags, go with the 890s. I throw 200-300 pounds of gear in the back sometimes and they're fine.

I've got 890's they ride really well, and paired with the tundra 5100's I get nice damping. No complaints. I've had it loaded down with ~200# and rode really well, and empty I get a nice firm ride (like a truck!) I don't think there's that much of a difference between the two. I'd probably bump up to the 891 if I go steel bumper and tire carrier, but that would be a bunch of weight off the back... I think it's being overthought here. Keep it simple.
