90 4runner starting issue

I have already searched the forums but having trouble finding if anyone actually fixed the problem.

Let me first say I love my new truck!

90 4runner
v6
automatic 4w

I bought a 90 runner (august of 2011) had new long block put in (everything else the same)

In the summer almost every time I drive home from work about 30 miles, and turn the truck off. It will not start back up, until it cools down?
Turn the key, and nothing (dash lights go off/dim) 1 single click

I can get it to start quicker by blowing air on the starter. At least it seems this helps and it will start in about 40 minutes to 1 1/2 and it will be fine. Never happens in the morning drive to work.

Any help would be great and thanks

thats easy, the starter solenoid is getting heat soaked and failing. you can fix this by installing a new starter and just put some tin shielding on the solenoid to keep the heat away.

I had a similar problem on Monday. Truck sat over night and when I left for work the next day, it wouldn't start. Didn't leave until about noon and it was hot out. Gave the starter a couple good smacks with my knuckle. I know, a blunt object would have been better and saved the skin on my knuckle but I was in a rush and a bit angry haha.

Question to Bad Vision; can the starter be rebuilt in some form (replacing the solenoid)? Similar to replacing the contacts in an alternator. Or does the whole starter assembly need to be replaced?

Thanks for the welcome and the reply, will let you know how it turns out after getting a quote to replace the starter. From looking where its at, looks like a bear to get out.

As a hoping end to this post, I changed out the starter today!!

I rescued my 4runner from Nevada, purchased for 400 with a blown motor.
The body has zero dents, paint is green but a bit dull and faded
Inside is very clean except the drivers seat,

Since August of 2011 I have
new long block
smog was a nightmare as I found the truck in Nevada and all
hoses had BB's in them and the fittings rusted and blocked
New Toyo Open country tires
Transmission service (fluid/filter)
And the starter

Time to really enjoy driving my 4runner without having to worry about it starting!

Thanks again for the help
