90k maintenance

Hey guys,

I just rolled over 90k in my 05' and decided to drop her off at my local mechanic for a couple days while I am out on business.

I told him to completely go over it and he has the green light to do whatever he thinks needs to be done. I completely trust him, he is as good a guy as they come and have known him for years. He wouldnt steal a dime from you.

He called me this morning and said the only thing he sees that needs to be done is new spark plugs and a new drive belt (he is also putting two new rotors on the front due to the issue it seems a lot of people have). I asked him about the timing belt and he said it has a chain so thats a non-issue.

Is there anything else that i should bring to his attention or have him go over? I just want to make sure its good to go for another 90, then another.

Fluids

I'd have him change the fluids in your diffs and transmission as well.

I'll assume from your mechanic's answer that yours is a V6?

I have a V8 and i had the 90k service done about 3 weeks ago. I had it done at a dealership, but i called to all the other dealership shops in the area, got the lowest prices on both the 90k service AND the timing belt replacement, then finally asked if the one I do business with can match it. They did.

The print-out they gave me was as thick as the Old Testement, but here's what I remember:

power steering flush
brakes bled, calipers serviced
trany flush n fill
change lube in the differentials
coolant flush n fill
oil n filter
new serpentine belt
new timing belt
new water pump (i requested this because ive heard "you might as well while the mechanic's in there", and im really glad i did! When he got the old one off, you could see there was a small leak, but the leaking fluid was collecting and burning off in a small "nook" of the pump assembly that wouldnt let it be seen to the naked eye!)

Like i said, im sure there's much more that was checked, done, etc. If you want a copy of the entire list, i could go get it from my file cab.

that's normal water pump leakage (used to happy talk advantage by the mechanics "found it just in time") but at 90K it is good insurance to change it nonetheless

hope they put the timing belt 'kit' in that also includes the tensioner/s,
those or the water pump locking up have the same unhappy consequences

Yep. Got the tensioners as well.

Flush out the brakes. T4r's are renowned for problems b/c people don't flush out the lines and the calipers go bad.

And change all the oils...transfer cases, diff...

Ive heard some horror stories about changing transmission fluid on higher mileage vehicles (80k and up) due to the high about of detergents in the fluid. Heard it can add additional problems and do more harm than good?

Anybody care to clarify?

Also, what mileage do you suggest changing out shocks?

If you have a Sport Edition, then you should have the XREAS suspension system. If thats the case, then you shouldnt have to replace it until the system fails. If there's oil escaping the system, then it'll need replacing. In that case, switch it out with Bilsteins and some FJ springs!

Trust me, you want to change that fluid out. The 5 speed WS transmissions are 'supposed' to be good to 100,000 miles but I can tell you first hand the fluid is worn out before that.

If you are at all uneasy about it, do it gradually. A really easy way to take care of it is just do a drain and fills every 1,000 miles or so. Do that 4 times and your system will have mostly new fluid in there.

Just make sure you use the correct type of fluid for your transmission.

Shocks....hard to say... one of my fronts started leaking at just under 80,000 miles so I'm going to replace all 4 before winter. I'd say you'd benefit from new shocks if you are anywhere close to or over 100k miles for sure though.

i had mine flushed/changed on my 07 at 100k...it shifts a lot better, no problems, and it was dirty..i bought the truck used, and i dont think it had ever been changed..the rear diff oil was really dirty also..the only thing i havent fixed is a leak in the water pump that I cannot see, (dealer told me it was leaking0 the water doesnt go down at all, i did buy a new pump just in case...but until i see some water loss, im not doing a thing...I have a v 6 though
