91 4runner and 02tacoma question.

But I am curious, as I've only skimed over the web on this. I have a 2002 tacoma prerunner 2wd now, I was wondering if the 4x4 components off of a 91 4runner would be a bolt on match.
As I have a 91 donor and I kind of want to rip the 4x4 ,w/ the 5spd trans, out of it and put it on the taco. With manual hubs ofc.
Does anyone have any clue if this can be done with minimal customizing to the taco.

No, those Tacoma’s have a wider wheelbase like the 3rd gen 4runners. The Tran would mate with the 3.4L but you would have to find the right ECU for it to run right. Or maybe not since you were toying with the idea of stuffing a 91’s t-case, axles, front diff, and all the parts in between, into a 2wd 2002 Tacoma. Lol

It has the uni. Plug for the A/T M/T so the ecu shouldn't be a problem.

So. No. Wider wheel base. In the 11 years in between your 4runner and your truck's manufacturing, the CV axle's design was changed. From bolting to a flange like on the 2nd gen 4Runner to sliding over a shaft with a pin on the 1st gen Tacoma. People have trouble swapping such parts from 3rd gen 4Runners to 1st gen Tacomas.

Remember the platform changes too. The 2nd gen 4Runner is built off a truck chassis while the 3rd gen 4Runner is built off of a Land Cruiser/Prado chassis. I'd imagine the 1st gen Tacoma chassis is VERY VERY different from a 2nd gen 4Runner chassis. I believe like the 3rd gen 4Runner, the 1st gen Tacomas use shocks/struts on the IFS.

I'd probably find a front clip from a 3rd gen 4WD 4Runner or a 1st gen 4WD Tacoma instead of doing it the wrong way.

Even if you were to do this, this is the wrong forum to post this in.

On top of that, you'd need to own and know how to use a welder.
