I'm glad to hear that the new radiator is working fine, and no head gasket issue, but I'm confused as to your confusion in the first place.
250k miles on a potentially stock (or even cheap aftermarket) radiator that you even admitted had little cracks all over it. Cheap 20 year old plastic that has been heat cycled thousands of times won't last forever.
You were wheeling on a steep grade, which put strain on the engine; higher RPMs, more coolant flow/pressure, etc.
I'm not surprised it blew.
Mine blew last year when I gunned it to get up a freeway ramp. My Torque Pro app let me know when my temps were in the high 90s, well before a dangerous temp. I had a several inch long split at the top that I was able to patch up with some JB Weld from a Wal-Mart nearby.
