96-98 Owners rejoice with me

I bought my 97 back in May after totaling my 99 and thought I could live without the cup holders in the console. I was wrong. I tried the cup holder in the dash once but I couldn't stand the bouncing. I've been searching junk yards since but haven't found one that wasn't cracked or scratched until today. Picked this one up from a 2000 model and it is in great shape for $50. I got all the brackets and I got the ebrake handle and the tub under the ebrake. I can't wait to get it in.

I've been searching for the parts for that swap for awhile. Every t4r I find in a salvage yard is usually stripped bare. Those flimsy dash cupholders look like they are begging for mercy with a Taco Hell large drink or two lol.

Yes, it is necessary to relocate the switches. I'm going to move mine to the blanks to the left of the steering wheel.

Technically you don't need you the ebrake and bracket if you are not afraid of drilling and tapping some new holes..

I reused the E-brake handle, bracket and the center console bracket as well. For the E-brake bracket, i just unbolted the front bolt and pushed the whole assembly towards the passenger side and secured it with a self tapping screw.

^^ Thats the same thing I did. Almost seems like a lot more work replacing the ebrake and tub underneath. Took me about an hr and a half to do it. Hasn't budged a bit.

Why would you have to change the tub? I swapped my ebrake but didn't change the tub underneath and it seems to work fine. What am I missing?

Your missing nothing, Only thing you missed was taking the extra hour to do it the other way.


Unless you cannot get the bracket and e-brake from the parts truck do it the other way, otherwise get the right parts and have everything bolt right in with out drilling, tapping, trimming, mending, and the extra time.

Hmm...I never had an issue with the cupholders in my '96. The part that supports the bottom of the cup broke off so cups fit nice and snug when I use it. Maybe it's one of those things where I'll have a "come to Jesus moment" if I tried using the '99+ style cupholders. Anyway, nice find!

I got the ebrake and the tub from the donor just because it was there. I was willing to mod the original ebrake handle if needed.

Done. I didn't mention this yesterday, but my 4Runner has rear heat and the console I found did not. This required quite a bit of modification to the new console using my Dremel to get my heat to work in it. I started to remove the rear heat components because I seldom need it here in Alabama, but decided to keep it since it was an option on the truck. I had to cut out the hole for the hot/cold slide under the ash tray in the back, then I had to trim around the duct work on the passenger side and make an opening for the duct coming out on the drivers side. I made some templates by tracing the old console. I moved the fan switch for the heat up on the dash behind the steering wheel adjustment. On my old console the fan switch was next to the ash tray in the back and the ashtray was actually moved to the left. There wasn't a good place to put it on the new console. I like it better up front with me anyway since I'm usually turning it on for my son.
