96 end of life options

so rust has taken the best of my 96's undercarriage. the frame could probably be plated as it is not rusted all the way through, but the rear axle assembly is pretty shot and brake lines went last week. sad thing is that the body has no rust at all, clean and straight. interior is in good condition and it runs like a top w/140k miles.

i hate the thought of sending it to the junkyard as it looks and runs great. but i dont want to sell it to anyone unless i know they are going to fix it because it is dangerous to drive without a new rear axle (i had the rear break lines replaced). dont really have time to part it out.

i could maybe just sell it as "parts vehicle". or guess i could invest the 2k or so to get it plated and rear end replaced, then sell it, but i think i'd be better off just selling it.

what would you folks recommend?

I love that color.
Looks very clean, its a real shame about the rust. If you have the room to do it and the time, I would look into parting it out. Seems like there is a good bit of money to be made doing it. Though I would imagine that it is a pain in the ass to do.

Axles are a dime a dozen in Texas. get a complete junk rear end and fix the frame if it's repairable!

wish i could get a cheap rear axle. im in new york and axle assembly runs around 600 from the yards around. think i'll just try to sell it as a "mechanics special". someone could put a few hundred bucks into it and a couple weekends and have a nice ride. i will definitely miss it.

Can you use it for parts on a new 4runner?

If you do end up selling it and you can wait until fall/early winter to sell it, you'll get considerably more money out of it.

Also, if you sell it as a parts vehicle, the new owner will probably keep it on the road as it's a running and driving vehicle.

Lastly, scrap is down last I heard, so you wont get much for it.

Axles are like $200 bucks, find another f@&d up truck with a good rear housing or order whole from az or tx. That color and overall condition imo deserve to be driven. Safe travels. I just sold a perfect drum to drum for $175 w/ abs a month ago.
