97 4runner overheated

Last night before the sun went down I greased up my driveshaft and took it for a spin. While driving, she overheated and the check engine light came on. Got her home and put water in the radiator and unplugged the battery to get rid of the check engine light. Drove her this morning and I don't see any leaks anywhere. Does anyone have any insight on what I should look for or where to start? I don't k ow when the water pump was replaced but the radiator looks newish.

Full on overheating? Mine was getting hot at low speeds and at lights. At highway speeds it was normal. My thermostat was bad.

Did you check the stored code(s) before you got rid of the CEL?

What do you mean by overheat? Steam coming out?

No the gauge was over red. No i didn't check the codes. Wasn't even thinking about it.

I just ran it today at idle for 30 min and sat under her. Didn't see anything

When did you last check the coolant level in the radiator (not the coolant reservoir)?

Found the leak but can't exactly pin point it. Where do you guys think I should look

Looks like the water pump possibly the Thermostat area? I'm looking at my FSM and it would be one of those but with out tearing apart the front its hard to say hundred percent.

hopefully water pump! mine was a head gasket :ybrick:

You can undo a few bolts and pull the timing belt cover back to get a better look.

Mine had a leak from the water pump to oil cooler hose about there. But yeah, thats right over the thermostat. A bad head gasket leak would send bubbles into the radiator with the casp off and engine cold...
