I'm 17, I sold my 98 ford ranger 4x4 for a nice price. and bought my 97 4Runner for a nice price. I hear people dying for a manual over here. It took me a week after I sold my truck to find this one and I jumped fast. The dude said he had 5 people wanting to look at it but I was first. :jump: People look for a clean 3rd gen 4runner manual for months, I guess I hit the jackpot :wof: 5650$ later.. And 750$ for new Cooper a/t3's. I am very happy I am in the 4runner game now. :reddance: These pics were before my a/t3's were on. The PO said it had a 2k$ 3inch suspension lift. I haven't had time to get her to flex yet with mid terms though.

4wd

Is your 4Runner 4wd? If it is, is there a light on the dashboard that comes on when you put it in 4wd? I have a 01 v6 manual and I think that the sensor on mine is broken. There is an outline of what looks like a 4wd indicator on my dashboard but Ive never seen it come on. The other thing is that when I engage 4wd it locks the center diff and it becomes undriveable on dry tarmac.I was just wondering if this is just how they are setup or if there is something wrong with my 4wd.

Thanks!
Matt

What year do you actually have? A manual transmission was no longer available in 2001.

Unless someone swapped a manual transmission into a 2001. In which case who knows what they did to accomplish the swap.

my 4wd takes a while for the light to turn on. and they didn't make a manual in 01. sounds like you need to tear some stuff apart to find out because that doesn't sound factory.
02SE is right 2000 or 1999 was last year I'm not sure.

Welcome!!!! Great Runner your going to love it and the many journeys it will take you on:clap2::clap2:

it's been 10 months. and she's treating me just right! this post was from a long time ago :jump:

If its not an 01 then it's an 2000. Ill have to check the manufacturing sticker. Its definitely an factory installed transmission. So yours has a 4wd light that comes on? Thats interesting. Does your center diff lock? Or does it drive normally? Thats my largest concern. Im not trying to ruin my tires and wear the engine out from driving it around with the diff locked.

The last year of manual transmission availability in a 3rd gen, was 2000. So that would make yours a 2000 or older.

Manual transmission 3rd gen 4Runner's were all part-time 4wd only. They had no center differential. When the transfer case is shifted into 4wd, the front and rear drivehsafts turn at the exact same speed, with no differentiation. That is why you can experience binding in the driveline if you try and turn on a high-traction surface while in 4wd.

Every 4wd 4Runner ever produced has a dash light or lights that indicates when the vehicle is in 4wd.

I have a factory 2000 5spd 4x4.

If you actually feel the tires binding when you put it in 4hi and you are sure you are in 4x4, then there is a possibility that the light is burnt out.

Does the light come on in 4 Low?

My 4x4 light does not come on in 4hi... only in 4lo but thats because its not actually engaging in 4hi... my 4hi switch is bad and not actuating the solenoid.

SR5Runner97 nice find. How many miles are on it?

I don't have a locking differential. My light takes a while to come on. I put it in 4HI and sit for 30 seconds and the light pops on. and it takes another 30 for the light to go off but yes I have a light. I don't have a locking differential. just normal 4wd. Only time i'm in 4wd is sand and offroad. I've driven it on road before in 4wd and it does just fine. and I can tell it is 4wd because it has a little more noise on road.
