I have a 98 4runner 4x4 with some sort of limited slip locker.. the rear clicks it alternates, so turning left the left rear wheel clicks, right, right wheel. Ive been told maybe its the diff? I added limited slip fluid.. still clicks.. the click sounds like it is coming from the center cap of the wheel.. but alternates with my direction of turning..

what could it be? oh and its not the not u-joint

It's probably a locker that locks the two rear axles together while driving straight. When you turn it unlocks allowing the outside wheel to turn raster than the inside wheel (since it has to travel in a farther arc). The clicking is normal and is the the locker unlocking to allow the tires to spin at different speeds. Sounds complicated I guess but a lot of people who drive off road install these automatic lockers, also called a lunchbox locker. It's a nice upgrade and greatly improves the off road capability of your truck. The downside is the clicking. It is totally normal, nothing wrong with it.

and the noise can come from the center caps?

The clicking sound travels down the axle. You could likely hear it under the truck as well. Sure it could be something else other than a locker but I don't know what. Sounds like the noise associated with an auto locker from the description.

Got pebbles in your center caps? lol
